CELPIP Re-evaluation vs PTE Rescore: Which Is Worth Requesting?

By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 3 min read

Missing your target by one level or a few points makes it tempting to ask for your test to be marked again. CELPIP and PTE Academic both allow it, but the two services work very differently: what is re-marked, how long you have to ask, and what happens to your score. This post compares them using each test owner's published policy at the time of writing. Fees and terms change, so check the current policy before you request one.

What is the difference between CELPIP re-evaluation and PTE rescore?

CELPIP re-evaluation has the sections you choose rated again, mainly Writing or Speaking, and you have six months to ask. A PTE rescore has a human expert rescore your entire test, and you must ask by phone within 14 calendar days of your score becoming available.

Can my score go down after re-scoring?

On PTE, yes: Pearson says the new score can go up or down and replaces the old one, and the old score report is no longer available. On CELPIP, read the official re-evaluation terms for what happens in every case before you request one.

Because a PTE rescore covers the whole test, a gain in one skill can come with a drop in another. That matters for Australian visas, where every skill has its own line.

Which sections can be re-scored?

On CELPIP, re-evaluation is really for Writing and Speaking: Listening and Reading are multiple choice and scored automatically, so they rarely change. On PTE, the rescore covers the whole test; you cannot choose one skill.

What is a PTE technical review?

A separate PTE service that checks your Speaking recordings for technical problems, such as a faulty microphone. It does not change your score: if a problem is found, Pearson refunds your test fee and the review fee, and you test again.

It must be requested within 15 business days of receiving your results, for USD 50 at the time of writing. CELPIP has no separate equivalent: report a technical problem at the centre on test day and contact CELPIP straight away.

When is re-scoring worth it?

When one skill is just below the line and clearly below what your practice tests showed. If you missed by two CELPIP levels or several PTE points, a better-prepared retake is usually the safer use of money.

  • Check your deadline first: a PTE rescore must be requested within 14 days, and you cannot book another PTE test while it is pending.
  • For CELPIP, you can book a retake date as a backup while a re-evaluation is in progress, if your deadline is close.
  • Remember that re-scoring rarely changes results; plan as if it will not.

How can I avoid needing a re-score?

Take a full timed mock test before you book and only sit the real test when every skill is at least at your target in practice. On CELPIP, Writing and Speaking are where results most often fall one level short.

Frequently asked questions

Is CELPIP re-evaluation cheaper than a retake?

Usually, and the Writing or Speaking fee is refunded if your score goes up. It only helps if you were close to the next level.

Can I get a PTE rescore after 14 days?

Not under Pearson's published policy. The request must be made by phone within 14 calendar days of your score being available.
