Questions about CELPIP vocabulary
Which CELPIP vocabulary should I learn first?
Start with the list for your weakest task. For Speaking and Writing, learn the phrases that organise an answer (giving advice, comparing options, giving reasons) before rarer single words: raters score how naturally and precisely you use words, not how unusual they are.
Do I need an account to use the vocabulary lists?
No. Every list is free and open to everyone. With a free CELPass account you can also save words to your own word bank, which brings each word back for review just before you would forget it.
What does the CLB next to each word mean?
It is our estimate of the CLB level at which learners typically use the word correctly, from CLB 5 to CLB 10. It is the same scale as the CELPass word bank. Words at or just above your target CLB are the ones most worth learning now; it is not an official CELPIP list.
How many words do I need for CLB 9?
There is no fixed number. What moves a Speaking or Writing score is using precise words correctly in context. Learning the words for each task and using a few of them in every practice answer works better than memorising a long list.
Is this the official CELPIP word list?
No. CELPIP does not publish a word list. These lists are written by CELPass, an independent platform not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises, for the situations each CELPIP task and part tests.
CELPass is an independent practice platform and is not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises. CELPIP is a trademark of Paragon Testing Enterprises. Check the official CELPIP website and IRCC for current test rules and requirements.
