Task 1: Writing an Email
Write an email of 150–200 words about an everyday situation, covering three points in the prompt.
- Mice in the ApartmentYou live in a large apartment building in Kitchener. For the past two weeks, you have seen mice in your kitchen, and you have found that they have chewed through food packages in your cupboards. Your neighbour across the hall has had the same problem.
- Missing a Friend’s Dinner PartyLast Saturday, your friend Elena invited you to a dinner party at her home to celebrate her new job. You had accepted the invitation, but you completely forgot about it and did not attend. She has not contacted you since then.
- Missing Overtime PayYou work at a food processing plant. Last month, your supervisor asked you to work 12 hours of overtime to finish a large order. However, when you received your most recent paycheque, none of the overtime hours had been included.
- Help with Moving DayYou are moving to a new apartment across Winnipeg on the May long weekend. You have rented a truck, but you do not have enough people to help you carry heavy furniture. Your friend Jordan has helped you in the past.
Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions
Choose one of two options in a survey and explain your choice in 150–200 words.
Check your answer
- Every point in the prompt is answered, each with a detail, reason or example.
- The tone fits the reader: formal for a company or manager, friendly but polite for a neighbour or friend.
- Task 1 has a greeting, a reason for writing, clear paragraphs and a closing; Task 2 picks one option and argues for it.
- 150–200 words, with linking words between ideas (however, as a result, for example).
- A final read for articles, verb tenses, plurals and spelling, since there is no spell checker.
Then open the prompt's sample page and compare your answer with the CLB 4–5, 7–8 and 11–12 samples, or get it scored: a free account scores three answers, and Mock 1 scores both tasks in a full mock.
FAQ
Is there a free CELPIP Writing practice test?
Yes. CELPass has 139 free CELPIP-format Writing prompts, each with sample answers around CLB 4–5, 7–8 and 11–12, no account needed. With a free account you can write under the real timer and get three answers scored by AI, and CELPass Mock 1, a full mock with both Writing tasks scored, is free as often as you like.
How long is the CELPIP Writing test?
About 53 minutes for two tasks: Task 1, writing an email, in 27 minutes, and Task 2, responding to survey questions, in 26 minutes. Each answer should be about 150–200 words.
How do I practise CELPIP Writing at home?
Pick a prompt, set a timer for 27 or 26 minutes, and type your answer without a spell checker, as on the test. Then check it against the list on this page and compare it with the sample answers at three levels, or get it scored on the four CELPIP dimensions.
Can AI score my CELPIP Writing for free?
Yes. A free CELPass account scores three Speaking or Writing answers on Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment, shown as a CLB range with the reason for each rating. It is a practice estimate, not an official CELPIP score.
What score do I need in CELPIP Writing?
It depends on your program: most Express Entry candidates need at least CLB 7 in every skill, and CLB 9 earns many more CRS points. Each skill is scored separately, so a weak Writing level is not offset by a strong Reading one.
