CELPIP vs IELTS for Australian Visas: Scores, Format and Which to Choose
By CELPass Editorial Team · Updated
Australia has accepted CELPIP-General alongside IELTS since 7 August 2025. Both can give you Competent, Proficient or Superior English, but they set the bar differently: IELTS asks for the same band in every skill, while CELPIP asks for a different level in each. This guide compares the two for Australian visas using Home Affairs' published scores at the time of writing. Rules change, so confirm the current requirement for your visa on the Home Affairs website before you book. Taking a test for Canada instead? See the Canadian comparison linked at the end.
Does Australia accept both CELPIP and IELTS?
Yes. Home Affairs accepts IELTS (Academic or General Training) and, since 7 August 2025, CELPIP-General for visas that ask for Vocational, Competent, Proficient or Superior English.
For results dated from 7 August 2025, Home Affairs accepts only tests taken in person at a test centre, so IELTS Online does not count. CELPIP-General LS, the two-skill test used for Canadian citizenship, is not accepted either: Australia needs all four skills.
How do CELPIP and IELTS scores compare for Australia?
IELTS needs 6 in every skill for Competent, 7 for Proficient and 8 for Superior. CELPIP needs 7 in every skill for Competent, then 9 / 8 / 10 / 8 for Proficient and 10 / 10 / 12 / 10 for Superior (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking).
| English level | Points | CELPIP-General | IELTS (Academic or General Training) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 0 (meets the minimum) | 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 | 6 / 6 / 6 / 6 |
| Proficient | 10 | 9 / 8 / 10 / 8 | 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 |
| Superior | 20 | 10 / 10 / 12 / 10 | 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 |
On both tests each skill is checked on its own. One skill below the line sets your level, however high the other three are.
Which skills are harder to reach on each test?
For Australia, Writing is CELPIP's hardest line and Reading and Speaking are its easiest. IELTS spreads the difficulty evenly, so for most IELTS takers the hardest line is simply their weakest skill, often Writing or Speaking.
One rough way to compare is Canada's official conversion, which IRCC uses to treat CELPIP and IELTS results as equal. Home Affairs does not use it, but it shows where Australia's CELPIP line sits relative to its IELTS line.
| Skill | IELTS needed | CELPIP needed | IELTS band IRCC treats as equal to that CELPIP level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 7 | 9 | 8.0 |
| Reading | 7 | 8 | 6.5 |
| Writing | 7 | 10 | 7.5 |
| Speaking | 7 | 8 | 6.5 |
Read that table as a hint, not a rule. It suggests CELPIP's Proficient line is relatively gentle in Reading and Speaking and relatively demanding in Listening and Writing. If Speaking is what holds you back in IELTS, CELPIP may be worth a look; if Writing is your weakest skill, IELTS may suit you better.
How do the CELPIP and IELTS formats differ?
The biggest differences are the Speaking test and the content. CELPIP Speaking is recorded on a computer; IELTS Speaking is a conversation with an examiner. CELPIP uses everyday Canadian situations, while IELTS Academic uses academic texts and General Training uses everyday and workplace texts.
| CELPIP-General | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer at a test centre | Paper or computer at a test centre |
| Speaking | 8 short tasks recorded into a headset | Face to face with an examiner, about 11–14 minutes |
| Sitting | All four skills in one sitting, about 3 hours | Speaking can be on a different day |
| Content | Everyday life and work in Canada | Academic or General Training versions |
| Listening and Reading answers | Multiple choice only | Several types, including filling in words |
| Scores | Levels M–12 per skill | Bands 0–9 per skill, in half bands |
| Writing and Speaking rated by | Trained raters | Trained examiners |
| Retaking one skill | Not available: you retake the whole test | One Skill Retake, accepted for most visas for tests from 7 August 2025 (check your visa) |
Who should choose CELPIP for Australia?
CELPIP tends to suit people whose Speaking or Reading is the skill that keeps them below Proficient, and people who would rather speak to a computer than to an examiner.
- You freeze in a face-to-face interview but can speak clearly when you have a moment to prepare.
- You type faster and more accurately than you handwrite.
- You find multiple-choice Listening and Reading easier than spelling answers into gaps.
- Your Writing is already strong, since Proficient needs CELPIP 10 and Superior needs 12 in Writing.
- You may also apply to Canada, where the same CELPIP result counts for Express Entry.
Who should choose IELTS for Australia?
IELTS tends to suit people whose Writing is their weakest skill, people who do better in a real conversation, and people who want the option of retaking a single skill.
- Your Writing is solid but not outstanding: IELTS asks for the same band in Writing as in the other skills.
- You speak more naturally when a person reacts to you.
- You are close to your target in one skill and want to use One Skill Retake, if your visa accepts it.
- You also need a result for study, or for a country that does not accept CELPIP.
- There is no CELPIP test centre near you, or no date that fits your deadline.
How long are CELPIP and IELTS results valid for Australia?
Home Affairs sets the same rule for both tests: for skilled visas the test generally needs to have been taken within three years before you are invited or apply, and for the 485 visa within one year before you apply.
IELTS results from tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 can still be used until 6 August 2028 or three years from the test date, whichever comes first. Check the date rule on your visa's page before you book.
How do I decide between CELPIP and IELTS?
Take a timed practice test in each format and compare every skill against that test's own line, not your overall score. The test where your weakest skill is closest to its line is usually the better bet.
Paragon offers free official CELPIP practice tests, and the CELPass diagnostic estimates your level in each CELPIP skill in about 25 minutes. CELPass shows CLB levels, which are the same numbers as CELPIP levels.
Frequently asked questions
Is CELPIP easier than IELTS for Australian PR?
Neither is easier for everyone. CELPIP's Proficient line is relatively demanding in Writing and relatively gentle in Reading and Speaking, so it depends on which skill is your weakest.
Can I combine a CELPIP result with an IELTS result for Australia?
Do not assume so. Home Affairs assesses results test by test, so plan to meet every skill's line on one test unless Home Affairs says otherwise for your visa.
