CLB 7 or more in every skill: your language earns some skill-transferability points; CLB 9 in every skill doubles them.
CLB 9 in every skill would add 56 CRS points to your profile.
Best next step: Listening is your lowest skill. One more level there adds 6 CRS points. See where you stand in Listening with the free diagnostic.
How the calculator works
Each CELPIP level is the same CLB level. For each skill, the calculator looks up the first official language points in IRCC's Comprehensive Ranking System grid and adds the four together. The points are lower when a spouse or partner comes with you, because some of the points move to your spouse's factors.
| CLB level | Without a spouse | With a spouse |
|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 or more | 34 | 32 |
| CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| CLB 8 | 23 | 22 |
| CLB 7 | 17 | 16 |
| CLB 6 | 9 | 8 |
| CLB 4 or 5 | 6 | 6 |
| Below CLB 4 | 0 | 0 |
Skill transferability: language with education or foreign work experience
IRCC also awards points for strong language combined with your education, and separately combined with foreign skilled work experience. These depend on your lowest skill: everything at CLB 7 or more earns some points, and everything at CLB 9 or more earns the most. That is why one section at CLB 8 can cost you up to 50 points.
| Combined with | CLB 7+ in all four (one under 9) | CLB 9+ in all four |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 years of foreign work experience | 13 | 25 |
| 3+ years of foreign work experience | 25 | 50 |
| One post-secondary credential (1 year or longer) | 13 | 25 |
| Two or more credentials (one of 3+ years), or a master's, professional degree or PhD | 25 | 50 |
Canadian work experience
Skilled work in Canada earns core points of its own, and it pairs with your education and foreign work experience the same way language does: 1 year earns the lower column, 2 years or more the higher one.
| Canadian work experience | Without a spouse | With a spouse |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 40 | 35 |
| 2 years | 53 | 46 |
| 3 years | 64 | 56 |
| 4 years | 72 | 63 |
| 5 years or more | 80 | 70 |
| Combined with | 1 year in Canada | 2+ years in Canada |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 years of foreign work experience | 13 | 25 |
| 3+ years of foreign work experience | 25 | 50 |
| One post-secondary credential (1 year or longer) | 13 | 25 |
| Two or more credentials (one of 3+ years), or a master's, professional degree or PhD | 25 | 50 |
Each group is capped at 50 in total: education with language plus education with Canadian work experience, and foreign work experience with language plus foreign work experience with Canadian work experience. So once Canadian work experience fills a group, a higher CLB adds nothing more to it, and the calculator's CLB 9 estimate reflects that. Spouses don't change skill-transferability points.
This is only part of your CRS score, and IRCC can change the grid. Check your full score with IRCC's own CRS tool before you make decisions. Program minimums come from our CELPIP score requirements guide; provincial nominee streams set their own.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a CELPIP score to CLB?
CELPIP levels convert one to one: a CELPIP 9 in a section is CLB 9 in that skill. Only the lowest result, M, has no matching CLB number.
How many CRS points do four CLB 9s give?
124 core language points without a spouse (31 per skill) and 116 with a spouse (29 per skill), before skill-transferability points.
How many extra CRS points does CLB 9 give with foreign work experience?
With 3 or more years of foreign skilled work experience, CLB 9 or more in all four skills gives 50 skill-transferability points instead of 25 at CLB 7 or 8. With 1 or 2 years it gives 25 instead of 13. Education works the same way, so CLB 9 can add up to 50 transferability points on top of the higher core points.
Does Canadian work experience change the language points?
Not the core language points, but it shares caps with them. Education combined with language and education combined with Canadian work experience are capped at 50 together, and so are foreign work experience combined with either. With 2 or more years of Canadian work experience and a master's degree, for example, the education group is already full, so CLB 9 adds nothing there.
Is this my full CRS score?
No. It shows the core points for your first official language and Canadian work experience, plus skill transferability for education and foreign work experience. Age, your level of education, a spouse's factors, a trade certificate, French and additional points all count too, so use IRCC's CRS tool for your full score.
