Example: Task 3, describing a scene

Cherry Blossom Park Family Photo Shoot. Describe some things that are happening in the picture below as well as you can. The person with whom you are speaking cannot see the picture. You have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak. Here is the start of an answer written at about CLB 7–8:

How the AI scores your recording

  1. Your recording is transcribed, with a start time, end time and clarity score for every word.
  2. CELPass measures your delivery from those timings: words per minute, every pause of two seconds or more, fillers such as um and uh, and the words that were hard to recognise.
  3. The AI rates the transcript and the measurements on Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment, and explains why each one is not yet at the next level.
  4. You see a CLB range, your labelled mistakes, and drills built from your own sentences.

Is there a free CELPIP Speaking practice test?

Yes. With a free CELPass account you can take CELPass Mock 1, a full CELPIP-format mock with all 8 Speaking tasks under real timing, as often as you like, and every recording is scored by AI. The free plan also scores three more Speaking or Writing answers and includes the 25-minute diagnostic. Without an account, every Speaking task has free sample answers at three CLB levels.

How does CELPass score a Speaking recording?

Your recording is transcribed with word-level timings, and CELPass measures your speaking rate, long pauses, fillers such as um and uh, and how clearly each word was recognised. The AI then rates the transcript and those measurements on the four CELPIP Speaking dimensions (Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment) and shows a CLB range with the reasons behind each rating.

Does the AI mark me down for my accent?

Not directly. Word clarity drops with an accent the recogniser is less used to, but also with background noise or a poor microphone, so it is only an indirect hint about pronunciation and never the only reason for a lower score.

Is an AI Speaking score the same as an official CELPIP score?

No. It is a practice estimate on the same dimensions CELPIP raters use, shown as a range of whole CLB levels. Only the official CELPIP test, rated by Paragon, gives a score you can use for immigration.

What do I need to practise Speaking?

A computer or phone with a microphone and a quiet room. Each task shows its preparation and speaking timer like the real test, so practise without pausing and without notes on screen.
