How to Book the CELPIP Test: A Step-by-Step Guide
By Natania · Booking and test day · Published · Updated · 5 min read
Booking CELPIP takes about fifteen minutes once you know which test you need and when you need the result. This guide walks through the decisions in order. Fees, ID rules and rescheduling policies are set by Paragon Testing Enterprises and can change, so always confirm the details on the official CELPIP website before you pay.
Which CELPIP test should I book?
Book CELPIP-General if you need the result for permanent residence, such as Express Entry or a provincial nominee program, and CELPIP-General LS only if you are applying for Canadian citizenship.
CELPIP-General tests all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) in one sitting of about three hours. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and takes about one hour. Booking the wrong one is an expensive mistake: an LS result cannot be used for permanent residence, because it has no Reading or Writing score.
| You are applying for | Book | Sections |
|---|---|---|
| Express Entry (FSW, CEC, FST) | CELPIP-General | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking |
| Provincial nominee programs and most other economic programs | CELPIP-General | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking |
| Canadian citizenship | CELPIP-General LS | Listening and Speaking |
If you are unsure, check the language requirement for your exact program on the IRCC website or with your provincial program before you book.
Where do I book the CELPIP test?
You book directly on the official CELPIP website, where you create an account, choose a test centre and date, and pay online.
Your CELPIP account is also where your results appear after the test, so use an email address you will still check in a few weeks, and keep your login details somewhere safe. Practice sites, including CELPass, do not sell or manage CELPIP bookings. CELPass is an independent practice platform and is not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises.
What do I need before I start booking?
Have your identification document, your legal name exactly as it appears on that document, a payment card and two or three possible test dates ready before you open the booking page.
- Identification: read the official CELPIP website's list of accepted ID before booking. The ID you bring on test day generally needs to match the details you enter in your account.
- Your name exactly as it appears on that ID, including middle names and spelling. A mismatch is one of the few things that can stop you from testing.
- A payment method for the test fee and applicable taxes.
- Your application deadline, or the date you plan to enter the Express Entry pool, so you can work backwards to a test date.
- Two or three test centres you could reach, in case your first choice is full.
How do I book CELPIP, step by step?
Create an account on the official CELPIP website, choose your test type, pick a location and date, enter your details and pay; you should then receive a confirmation.
- Create your CELPIP account and confirm your email address.
- Choose the test type: CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS.
- Search for test centres near you and compare the available dates and start times.
- Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your ID, then check them twice.
- Read the policies shown before payment, especially rescheduling, cancellation and ID rules.
- Pay the fee and save the confirmation email and any booking reference.
- Add the date, start time and centre address to your calendar with a reminder a week before and the day before.
Popular centres in large cities can fill up weeks ahead, especially on weekends. If the dates you want are gone, check nearby centres or look again later, as seats sometimes reopen.
How far ahead should I book CELPIP?
Book far enough ahead that you have time to prepare, receive your results and still retake once before your deadline if you need to.
Results usually appear in your online CELPIP account within about a week of the test. IRCC accepts CELPIP results for two years from the test date, and they must still be valid when you submit your application. That gives you room to test early rather than at the last minute. A simple way to plan:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 8–12 weeks before your deadline | Take a diagnostic or mock test and find your gap to the target CLB |
| 6–10 weeks before | Book your first test date |
| 4–6 weeks of study | Practise every task in the real format and timing |
| About 1 week after the test | Check your results in your CELPIP account |
| Remaining weeks | Buffer for a retake if one section falls short |
If you are well below your target, book a little later and use the time to study. A test you take before you are ready costs a full fee and teaches you little that a mock test could not.
How much does the CELPIP test cost?
The fee depends on the test type and your location, and it changes from time to time, so the only reliable figure is the one shown on the official CELPIP website when you book.
Taxes are usually added at checkout. Optional services, such as faster results or a re-evaluation of your Writing or Speaking score, cost extra. When you budget, it is worth allowing for the possibility of a second attempt, because every attempt is paid separately.
Can I reschedule or cancel my CELPIP booking?
Rescheduling and cancellation are possible under Paragon's policies, but deadlines and fees apply, so read the current rules on the official CELPIP website before you pay.
In general, the closer you are to the test date, the fewer options you have. If you think your date may move, for example because of work travel, choose a date you are confident about rather than booking early and paying to change it.
What should I do after booking?
Check that your confirmation shows the right test type, date, centre and name, then turn your remaining weeks into a study plan aimed at your weakest section.
- Open the confirmation email right away and fix any spelling error in your name through the official channels.
- Plan your route to the centre and how long it takes at the time of day you will travel.
- Find your current level in each section, then spend most of your time where the gap is biggest.
- Take at least one full timed mock test before the real one, so the three-hour sitting is not a surprise.
The free CELPass diagnostic predicts your CLB in each section in about 25 minutes, which is a quick way to see where to focus before your test date.
