CELPIP vs PTE for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa

By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 3 min read

The 485 Temporary Graduate visa has its own English rule, separate from the PR visas, set in LIN 25/089 from 7 August 2025. Both CELPIP-General and PTE Academic are accepted, and both ask for an overall score plus a minimum in each skill. This post compares the two for 485 applicants. The scores are as published at the time of writing; exemptions and lower scores apply to some passport holders, so confirm the current rule on the Home Affairs 485 page before you book.

Does the 485 visa accept CELPIP and PTE?

Yes. For tests taken from 7 August 2025, the 485 accepts CELPIP-General and PTE Academic, along with IELTS and the other tests on Home Affairs' list. The test must be taken in person at a test centre.

What CELPIP and PTE scores do I need for the 485?

CELPIP needs an overall score of at least 8 with at least 6 in each skill. PTE Academic needs an overall score of at least 55 with at least 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking.

CELPIP reports a level for each skill rather than one overall score, so ask Home Affairs or a registered migration agent how your CELPIP result will be read against the overall line before you rely on it.

Is CELPIP or PTE easier for the 485?

Neither is easier for everyone; it depends on how you handle each format. PTE's per-skill lines are low and the overall score usually decides the result, while CELPIP asks for a solid 6 in every skill, so one weak skill matters more.

How recent must my test be for the 485?

The test must have been taken in the year before you apply, whichever test you choose. That is much tighter than the three years allowed for most skilled visas, so time your test for the last months of your studies.

Should I aim higher than the 485 minimum?

If you plan to apply for PR later, yes. Competent English for the 189, 190 and 491 needs CELPIP 7 in every skill, and Proficient English (10 points) needs CELPIP 9 / 8 / 10 / 8, so a higher score now can save a second test.

How do I choose between CELPIP and PTE for the 485?

Try a timed practice test in each format, check your weakest skill against each test's line, and look at available dates near you before you book.
