AI Speech and Writing Scoring Explained: 29 Terms Every CELPIP Learner Should Know

By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 12 min read

AI scoring tools describe themselves with a lot of technical terms: ASR, LLMs, prosody analysis, forced alignment, explainable AI. This guide explains 29 of them in plain English, what each one can and cannot tell you about a CELPIP answer, and the questions to ask before you trust a score. Along the way, you will see how CELPass puts these technologies to work in BandBridge™, SpeechTrace™ and Track & See™.

How does AI score a CELPIP Speaking or Writing answer?

An AI scorer works as a pipeline. For Speaking, speech recognition turns your audio into text and timings, measurement tools analyse how you spoke, and a language model rates what you said against the scoring criteria. For Writing, the pipeline starts at the language model.

The four stages of an AI speaking scorer.
StageQuestion it answersTypical technologies
HearingWhat words did you say, and when?ASR, deep learning, word timestamps, forced alignment
Measuring deliveryHow fluently and clearly did you speak?Fluency assessment, disfluency detection, prosody and pronunciation analysis
Understanding languageIs the answer relevant, organised and accurate?LLMs, NLP, NLU, discourse and lexical analysis
Scoring and explainingWhat level is this, and why?Rubric-grounded evaluation, explainable AI, uncertainty estimates

The terms below are grouped by stage. You do not need all of them to get a useful score, but knowing what each does helps you judge any tool's claims, including ours.

What is Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)?

Automatic Speech Recognition converts spoken audio into text. It is the first step of almost every AI speaking scorer, because most language analysis works on words, not sound.

In CELPass, every Speaking recording is transcribed by an ASR service that also returns a start time, end time and recognition confidence for each word. Those extra details are what make delivery measurement possible.

What is deep learning in speech and language scoring?

Deep learning is a family of machine-learning methods built on many-layered neural networks. It powers modern speech recognition and large language models, and it is the reason both became accurate enough for practical scoring in recent years.

Both the speech recogniser and the language models CELPass uses are deep-learning systems.

What are transformer-based models?

Transformers are the neural-network architecture behind today's large language models and many speech models. Their key idea, attention, lets the model weigh every word against every other word, which is why they handle long, connected answers well.

That matters for CELPIP because coherence is judged across a whole answer, not sentence by sentence. The language models behind BandBridge™, the CELPass scoring engine, are transformer-based.

What are Large Language Models (LLMs)?

Large Language Models are transformer models trained on very large amounts of text. They can read an answer, judge it against criteria and write feedback in natural language, which earlier scoring systems could not do.

LLMs are also known to be generous raters if left unguided. That is why CELPass's BandBridge™ gives the model explicit CELPIP-style criteria, requires evidence for every criterion and tells it to check whether a lower level fits before it settles on a score.

What is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

Natural Language Processing is the broad field of computers working with human language: grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and meaning. Spell checkers, grammar checkers, translation and AI scoring are all NLP.

In CELPass, NLP is what finds and explains the grammar, vocabulary and coherence mistakes in your Speaking transcript or Writing answer.

What is Natural Language Understanding (NLU)?

Natural Language Understanding is the part of NLP concerned with meaning: what the speaker intends, what they are answering, and whether the answer makes sense in context. Spotting a grammar error is NLP; noticing that you recommended the wrong option is NLU.

Modern LLMs perform much of this understanding directly. In CELPass, it is how BandBridge™ checks that you actually addressed each part of the task rather than only writing correct sentences.

What is computational linguistics?

Computational linguistics is the science of modelling language structure with computers: syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning) and discourse (how sentences connect). It provides the categories that NLP tools use to describe errors.

CELPass files every mistake under a fixed set of linguistic patterns, such as article use or verb tense, inside grammar, vocabulary, coherence and fluency. A fixed classification means the same mistake is counted the same way every time, so progress can be measured.

What are speech-language models?

Speech-language models are a newer kind of model that takes audio and text together, so one system can both hear and understand. They are an active research area and are starting to appear in commercial products.

Most scoring tools today, CELPass included, still use a pipeline of a speech recogniser followed by a language model, because each part can be checked and tuned separately.

What is speech signal processing?

Speech signal processing analyses the audio signal itself: its frequencies, loudness and timing. It sits underneath speech recognition and any tool that measures how you sound rather than what you say.

Recording quality affects everything built on it. For CELPIP practice, use a quiet room and a headset microphone so any tool, and the real test, hears you clearly.

What is acoustic feature extraction?

Acoustic feature extraction pulls measurable characteristics out of audio, such as pitch, energy (loudness) and the duration of sounds and silences. These features feed prosody, pronunciation and fluency analysis.

CELPass's SpeechTrace™ works from timing features, the duration of your speech and the silences between words, rather than from pitch or loudness.

What is prosody analysis?

Prosody is the music of speech: rhythm, word stress and intonation. Prosody analysis measures it from pitch, loudness and timing, for example whether your voice rises for a question or stresses the key word in a sentence.

Prosody affects how easy you are to follow, which CELPIP raters consider under Listenability. You can practise it without any tool: record yourself, stress the words that carry meaning, and let your voice fall at the end of a statement.

What is phoneme-level analysis?

A phoneme is a single speech sound, such as the 'th' in 'think'. Phoneme-level analysis checks each sound against a reference pronunciation, which can show exactly which sounds a learner struggles with.

It works best with read-aloud text, where the expected words are known in advance. CELPIP Speaking answers are spontaneous, which makes sound-by-sound judgements harder and less reliable.

What is forced alignment?

Forced alignment matches a known text to an audio recording and finds the exact start and end time of every word or sound. It is a standard tool in speech research and pronunciation training.

CELPass gets word timings a simpler way: the speech recogniser returns a start and end time with every word it hears. That is enough to measure pace and pauses, which is what SpeechTrace™ needs.

What is automated pronunciation assessment?

Automated pronunciation assessment estimates how accurately and intelligibly you pronounce words, usually by comparing your sounds with reference models. Its accuracy depends heavily on accent coverage, audio quality and whether the expected words are known.

CELPass is deliberately cautious here. The recogniser's word clarity is used only as an indirect hint, never as the only reason for a lower score, because it also drops with background noise, a weak microphone or an unusual name. Be wary of any tool that gives a precise pronunciation score for spontaneous speech without explaining how.

What is fluency assessment?

Fluency assessment measures how smoothly you speak: your speaking rate, how often and how long you pause, and how much you hesitate. Unlike pronunciation, these can be measured objectively from word timings.

This is SpeechTrace™'s main job in CELPass. It measures your words per minute over your actual speaking time, lists every silent gap of two seconds or more, and passes those numbers to BandBridge™, so fluency is judged from data rather than guessed from a transcript.

What is disfluency detection?

Disfluency detection finds the things that interrupt smooth speech: fillers such as um and uh, repeated words, false starts and self-corrections. Some disfluency is normal in natural speech; a lot of it makes you harder to follow.

SpeechTrace™ counts hesitation fillers in every Speaking answer. Repetitions and self-corrections are not penalised on their own: BandBridge™ follows a rule that natural spoken features lower the score only when they get in the way of meaning.

What are speech embeddings?

A speech embedding is a list of numbers that represents a stretch of audio, produced by a neural network, so that similar-sounding speech gets similar numbers. Embeddings let models compare voices, accents or sounds mathematically.

They are a building block inside many speech models rather than something a learner sees directly.

What is semantic similarity analysis?

Semantic similarity analysis measures how close two pieces of text are in meaning, even when they use different words. Scoring tools can use it to check whether an answer stays on topic or resembles a model answer.

Similarity to a model answer is a weak signal for CELPIP, because a strong answer can take a completely different approach. CELPass checks relevance with a task check instead: it lists what the prompt asks for and verifies whether each part was answered.

What is discourse analysis?

Discourse analysis looks at how sentences connect into a whole: organisation, logical flow, and the linking words that guide a reader or listener. It is the technical side of what CELPIP calls coherence.

In CELPass, coherence is rated as its own criterion in every Speaking and Writing answer, with an explanation of what is holding it below the next level.

What is lexical diversity analysis?

Lexical diversity measures vocabulary variety: how many different words you use and how often you repeat them. A wider, more precise vocabulary is one of the things that separates the higher CELPIP levels.

Raw variety is not the whole story, because a rare word used wrongly does not help. CELPass's BandBridge™ rates vocabulary as a criterion, judging range and precision together, and flags word-choice mistakes individually.

What is syntactic complexity analysis?

Syntactic complexity analysis measures the range of your sentence structures: simple versus complex sentences, subordinate clauses, and how varied your grammar is. Higher CELPIP levels expect a wider range used accurately.

In CELPass, grammar range and accuracy are judged together by BandBridge™, and every grammar error is labelled with its pattern and turned into a drill.

What is multimodal AI?

Multimodal AI processes more than one kind of input, such as audio, text and images, in a single model. For speaking assessment, that means a model that hears your voice and reads your words at the same time.

CELPass combines audio and text in a pipeline instead: SpeechTrace™ measures the audio and BandBridge™ reads the transcript together with those measurements.

What is end-to-end speech understanding?

End-to-end speech understanding processes speech directly, without first turning it into a transcript. In principle, it can keep information a transcript loses, such as tone of voice.

The trade-off is transparency: with a transcript you can see exactly what the system heard. CELPass shows you your transcript, so you can check it before you trust the feedback.

What is self-supervised speech representation learning?

Self-supervised learning trains a model on large amounts of unlabelled audio, letting it discover useful features of speech on its own before it is fine-tuned for a task such as recognition. It is one reason modern speech recognisers handle many accents better than older systems.

It is a training method used by model builders, not a feature a learner uses directly.

What is context-aware language assessment?

Context-aware assessment judges an answer against its situation: the task, the audience and the purpose. An informal email can be excellent to a friend and wrong to a property manager.

Before CELPass scores a Writing answer, BandBridge™ lists every requirement in the prompt (each bullet point, the expected tone and the format) and checks which ones are missing or thin. That is why its feedback can name the exact part of the task you underdeveloped.

What is rubric-grounded LLM evaluation?

Rubric-grounded evaluation gives a language model explicit scoring criteria and level descriptions, and requires it to score each criterion separately with evidence, instead of giving a general impression.

This is the core of BandBridge™. It scores each CELPIP dimension on the 2–12 scale, applies level ceilings (a clear, accurate but under-developed Speaking answer should not exceed CLB 9) and, for Writing, caps the overall level at the weakest consistent criterion.

What is Automated Speech Scoring (ASS)?

Automated Speech Scoring predicts a speaking level from a combination of acoustic features (how you sound) and linguistic features (what you say). It has been used in large-scale language testing for years.

CELPass's Speaking score is automated speech scoring built from both sides: timing-based delivery measurements from SpeechTrace™ and a rubric-grounded rating of the transcript from BandBridge™.

What is Explainable AI (XAI)?

Explainable AI means a system shows the reasons behind its output, not just the output. For a learner, an explained score is far more useful than a bare number, because it tells you what to change.

Every BandBridge™ criterion score comes with the reason it is not yet at the next level, every mistake is labelled with its rule, and your Speaking feedback shows the measured pace, pauses and fillers behind the fluency judgement.

What is confidence calibration?

Confidence calibration checks that a system's stated confidence matches reality: if it says it is 80% sure, it should be right about 80% of the time. A calibrated scorer knows when it might be wrong.

CELPass shows its uncertainty openly. Your predicted CLB is a range of whole levels that is wide after one attempt and narrows as your scores agree with each other. It is an estimate for practice, not an official CELPIP result.

Which of these technologies does CELPass use?

CELPass combines speech recognition, transformer-based LLMs and its own measurements into three named tools: BandBridge™ for scoring, SpeechTrace™ for speaking delivery and Track & See™ for Listening and Reading patterns.

What should I ask before trusting an AI CELPIP score?

Ask what the tool measures, how it explains its scores and how sure it is. Impressive technology names matter less than whether the feedback tells you what to change in your next answer.

  1. Does it score each CELPIP dimension separately, with reasons?
  2. For Speaking, does it measure pace and pauses from your audio, or only read a transcript?
  3. Does it show you the transcript, so you can check what it heard?
  4. Does it show a range, or a precise-looking number from a single answer?
  5. Does it say clearly that its score is an estimate, not an official CELPIP result?

Frequently asked questions

Can AI score CELPIP Speaking accurately?

It can give a useful estimate on the CELPIP dimensions, especially when it measures delivery from audio and explains each criterion. Only the official CELPIP test gives a score accepted for immigration.
