CELPIP Study Materials: What Is Worth Using
By Natania · Study tips · Published · 3 min read
There is no shortage of CELPIP material: official practice tests, books, apps, YouTube channels, template packs and courses. Most people do not need much of it. What you need is the real format, enough test-style practice to find your weak spots, a way to get feedback on Writing and Speaking, and everyday English to build range. Here is what each kind of material is good for.
Start with the official material
Paragon Testing Enterprises, which runs CELPIP, publishes free practice tests on the official CELPIP website and sells additional practice and preparation material. The official material shows the real screens, timing and question style better than anything else, so use it first for the format and save at least one full test for the last week or two. Check the CELPIP website for what is available now and its prices.
What each kind of material is good for
| Material | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Official practice tests | The real format and timing; a reliable baseline | Limited number, so do not burn them early |
| Practice platforms and question banks | Volume of test-style practice, one task type at a time, scoring | Quality varies; results are estimates, not official scores |
| General English grammar and vocabulary books | Building range when you are two or more levels short | Not test-specific; pair them with timed practice |
| Books of CELPIP tests from other publishers | Extra practice when you have used the official ones | Check they follow the current format and task list |
| Template packs | A starting structure for each Speaking and Writing task | Full scripts that do not fit real prompts |
| Videos and webinars | Seeing a task explained once | Watching is not practising; keep it short |
| Podcasts, radio and news | Listening speed and everyday Canadian vocabulary | Too passive unless you summarise what you heard |
Do you need a CELPIP book?
Not necessarily. CELPIP is taken on a computer, with on-screen timers, typed Writing and recorded Speaking, so practice on a screen is closer to test day than practice on paper. A book is useful for general grammar and vocabulary if your English needs to grow, and for extra Reading practice if you prefer paper. Before buying a book of practice tests, check that it covers the current four Reading parts, six Listening parts, two Writing tasks and eight Speaking tasks.
Free materials that are worth your time
- Paragon's free official practice tests on the CELPIP website.
- Free sample tests and sample answers that show what each level looks like.
- Free lessons on each skill, with exercises and answers.
- Canadian news, radio and podcasts, used actively: listen once, then write three sentences about what you heard.
- Your own recordings: a phone voice recorder is the most useful free Speaking tool there is.
What to skip
- Anything sold as real recent test questions or answers. Paragon's terms make you responsible for preparing with live test items, and such material cannot be checked.
- Full memorised answers for Speaking or Writing. They rarely fit the prompt you get.
- Word lists of rare, impressive vocabulary. Precise everyday words score better than unusual ones used slightly wrong.
- Any course or product that guarantees a specific CLB level.
How to combine materials into a plan
Keep it small. One source of official material, one source of test-style practice with feedback, and one habit of everyday English is enough for most people. Measure with a diagnostic first, give most of your time to the weakest section, and add a new resource only when you have a specific gap it fills.
CELPass is an independent practice platform, not affiliated with Paragon. It combines a question bank by task type, full mock tests, AI scoring on the four CELPIP dimensions and daily drills built from your own mistakes, and the free plan lets you try it alongside the official material.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best book for CELPIP?
There is no single best book. Paragon's official material is the most accurate for the format; for building general English, any good grammar and vocabulary book at your level works. Pair either with timed practice on a screen.
Are there official CELPIP study materials?
Yes. Paragon publishes free practice tests on the official CELPIP website and sells further practice and preparation material there.
