How to Practise CELPIP Speaking With ChatGPT

By David · Speaking · Published · 4 min read

ChatGPT can give you an endless supply of CELPIP-style Speaking prompts and talk through your answers with you. What it cannot do on its own is put you in the real test situation: a fixed preparation time, a 60- or 90-second countdown, a microphone and no one responding. This post shows how to set up realistic Speaking practice with a chatbot, which prompts to use for each task, and where you still need a CELPIP-specific tool.

How can I practise CELPIP Speaking with ChatGPT?

Use ChatGPT for the prompt and the feedback, and your phone for the timing and the recording. Ask for one task in the real format, prepare with a timer, record your answer, then give the chatbot a transcript and ask for feedback on the CELPIP criteria.

  1. Ask: "Give me one CELPIP Speaking Task 5 prompt in the official format. Do not give tips or a sample answer yet."
  2. Start a timer for the preparation time (30 seconds for most tasks, 60 seconds for Tasks 5 and 6) and make short notes.
  3. Record yourself with your phone's voice recorder for the speaking time: 60 seconds for most tasks, 90 seconds for Tasks 1 and 7.
  4. Transcribe the recording with your phone's dictation or a speech-to-text app, and keep every um and repeated word.
  5. Paste the prompt and the transcript and ask for feedback (prompt below).

Can ChatGPT simulate a real CELPIP Speaking exam?

Only partly. It can write prompts in the right style and describe or generate a picture, but it does not enforce CELPIP's preparation and speaking timers, the picture tasks will not match the test's style, and a voice conversation is not like speaking alone to a microphone.

The last point matters more than people expect. In a voice chat the other side reacts, asks questions and fills silences. In CELPIP nobody reacts, and you have to keep a structured answer going for the whole time. Practise that version, alone with a timer, at least as often as you chat.

Can ChatGPT evaluate my CELPIP Speaking answer?

It can evaluate what you said, but from a transcript it cannot judge how you said it. Listenability, one of the four CELPIP Speaking criteria, depends on pace, pauses, pronunciation and rhythm, and most of that is lost when speech becomes text.

A transcript still shows a lot: whether you answered the task, how you organised your ideas, your vocabulary and grammar, and, if you keep them, how many fillers and restarts you used. Ask the chatbot for that, and judge your delivery separately by listening to the recording.

  1. "This is a CELPIP Speaking Task [n] prompt: [paste]. Below is the transcript of my 60-second answer, including fillers."
  2. "Do not rewrite it yet. Comment on Content and Coherence, Vocabulary and Task Fulfillment, quoting my words."
  3. "Did I answer every part of the task? Was my structure clear: main point, reasons, example, conclusion?"
  4. "Now give me a better version that uses my ideas and stays under 60 seconds when spoken."

What ChatGPT prompts work for each CELPIP Speaking task?

Ask for the task by number and name, and ask for the official format with no tips. These work well:

TaskPrompt to ask for
1: Giving AdviceA friend or family member with a practical problem who asks you for advice
2: Talking About a Personal ExperienceA question about a time something happened to you, such as a memorable trip
3: Describing a SceneA detailed written description of a busy scene to describe as if you can see it
4: Making PredictionsThe same scene, asking what will probably happen next
5: Comparing and PersuadingTwo options; choose one, then persuade a family member who prefers the other
6: Dealing with a Difficult SituationA dilemma with two people to talk to; choose one and explain
7: Expressing OpinionsAn opinion question on a community or workplace topic
8: Describing an Unusual SituationAn unusual object to describe on the phone to someone who cannot see it

When should I use a CELPIP-specific Speaking scorer instead?

When you want to know your level, or whether your delivery is improving. CELPass scores your recording itself: it measures speaking rate, long pauses, fillers and word clarity from the audio, rates the four CELPIP criteria, and shows a CLB range.

A practical split: chatbot practice on most days for ideas and vocabulary, and a scored task in the real test screen once or twice a week to check that the practice is turning into a higher level.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT voice mode good for CELPIP Speaking practice?

It is good for fluency and confidence, because you have to answer in real time. It is less like the test, where nobody responds and you speak for a fixed time, so mix it with timed solo recordings.

Can ChatGPT give me CELPIP Speaking practice questions?

Yes, and as many as you like. Ask for the official format and check them against real-format tasks, because generated prompts are sometimes simpler or longer than the test's.
