Can ChatGPT Score Your CELPIP Writing? What It Gets Right and Wrong
By Rita · Writing · Published · 4 min read
Pasting your CELPIP email into ChatGPT and asking 'what CLB is this?' is one of the most common ways people check their Writing today. You will get an answer in seconds, and the corrections are often useful. The level is a different story. This post explains what a general chatbot does well with CELPIP Writing, why its scores should not decide when you book the test, and how to get much more out of it with a better prompt.
Can ChatGPT accurately score CELPIP Writing?
Not reliably. ChatGPT can describe the strengths and weaknesses of your answer well, but it has not been calibrated against officially rated CELPIP responses, so the level it gives is a guess that can change if you ask again in a new chat.
There are a few common reasons a chatbot's level drifts: it tends to be encouraging, it may judge mainly by grammar, and it may not check every bullet point in the prompt unless you paste the whole task. Each of these can push the score away from what a CELPIP rater would give.
What is ChatGPT good at in CELPIP Writing?
Explaining and improving. It is very good at finding grammar mistakes, explaining the rule behind each one, suggesting more precise words and showing how a sentence could sound at a higher level.
- Correcting articles, verb tenses, prepositions and sentence boundaries, with explanations.
- Suggesting more precise vocabulary for words you overuse, such as good, bad and very.
- Checking whether your tone fits the reader: a manager, a neighbour or a friend.
- Brainstorming reasons and examples for a survey question when you are stuck for ideas.
- Turning your mistakes into short practice exercises.
What does ChatGPT miss when it scores CELPIP Writing?
Mostly the things CELPIP rewards beyond grammar. Task Fulfillment (did you cover every bullet point, in the right tone and format, within 150–200 words?) and Content and Coherence (are your ideas developed and organised?) count as much as Vocabulary and Readability.
- It may not know the exact task unless you paste the full prompt and all its bullet points.
- It cannot tell whether you wrote under real time pressure, which is what the test measures.
- It may rewrite your answer instead of judging it, and a rewrite tells you nothing about your level.
- Its score can change between chats, so a single number is weak evidence.
What is a good ChatGPT prompt for CELPIP Writing feedback?
Give it the full task, tell it to judge rather than rewrite, and ask for each CELPIP criterion separately. A prompt like the one below gets more useful feedback than 'what CLB is this?'
- "Here is a CELPIP Writing Task 1 prompt: [paste the whole prompt, including every bullet point]."
- "Here is my answer, written in 27 minutes: [paste]."
- "Do not rewrite it. For each of these criteria, Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment, list what I did well and the two most important problems, quoting my words."
- "Check every bullet point: say whether I answered it fully, briefly or not at all."
- "Then list my grammar mistakes in a table: my sentence, the correction and the rule."
Leave the level until last, and treat it as a rough opinion. The criterion-by-criterion feedback is the valuable part.
How is a CELPIP-specific AI scorer different?
It is built and checked for one job. CELPass's scoring engine always reads the full task, rates the four CELPIP criteria separately with quotes as evidence, averages them into your level, and is checked against officially rated CELPIP sample answers at CLB 4–5, 7–8 and 11–12.
It also tracks your mistakes across answers, so you can see whether a pattern, such as missing articles, is shrinking over time. A chat does not remember what you got wrong last week unless you tell it.
Can ChatGPT give me sample CELPIP Writing answers with scores?
It can write sample answers, but the score it attaches is its own opinion, and AI-written samples often sound more polished than real CLB 9 answers. Samples from real-format tasks at labelled levels are a better model.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheating to use ChatGPT to prepare for CELPIP?
No. Using AI to practise and get feedback is ordinary preparation. What matters is that on test day you write your own answer; memorised text that does not fit the task can hurt your score.
Should I memorise an answer ChatGPT wrote?
No. Learn useful phrases and structures from it, but write each practice answer yourself. Memorised paragraphs rarely fit a new prompt.
