What Is a Good CELPIP Score? It Depends on Your Goal

By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 3 min read

CELPIP has no pass mark, so 'good' only means something against a goal. A level that is plenty for citizenship can be far too low for a competitive Express Entry profile. This post gives the targets for the most common goals, explains why CLB 9 comes up so often, and helps you set a realistic target for your own situation. Program rules change, so confirm your minimum on IRCC's website.

What is a good CELPIP score?

For most Express Entry candidates, CLB 9 in all four skills is a strong score, because it earns close to the maximum CRS language points and the best skill-transferability combinations. CLB 7 is the minimum for Federal Skilled Worker, and citizenship needs CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking.

Why is CLB 9 considered a good CELPIP score?

Because the CRS rewards it most. A single candidate earns 31 core points per skill at CLB 9 against 23 at CLB 8, and CLB 9 in all four skills unlocks the top skill-transferability points with education or foreign work experience. Above CLB 9, the extra points are small.

Is CELPIP Level 9 difficult to achieve?

It is demanding but realistic for many strong English users with focused practice. In Listening it means getting most of the 38 questions right, and in Speaking and Writing it means clear, well-organised answers with precise vocabulary and few errors, under time pressure.

What is the difference between CELPIP Level 7 and Level 9?

Level 7 shows adequate proficiency: you complete the task with some limitations. Level 9 shows effective proficiency: tasks are completed fully, ideas are developed, vocabulary is precise and errors rarely get in the way. In CRS terms, the gap is 56 core points for a single candidate across four skills, before transferability points.

What CELPIP score do I need for a work permit or a provincial program?

Each program sets its own level. The post-graduation work permit asks for CLB 7 or CLB 5 depending on what you studied, and provincial nominee streams set their own minimums, often counting your lowest skill. Check the program's official page, then aim a level above the minimum if points are involved.

Does a good score need to be the same in every skill?

No, but every skill must meet the minimum on its own, and for Express Entry the CRS gives points per skill. A profile with 10, 10, 9 and 7 is eligible for Federal Skilled Worker, but it scores fewer points than 9 in every skill would in the skill-transferability factors, which look at your levels across all four skills.

In practice the weakest skill decides most outcomes, so a balanced result is usually worth more than one very high score.

How do I set the right CELPIP target for me?

  1. Find your program's minimum on IRCC's website.
  2. Calculate your CRS with the levels you can realistically reach, and compare with recent draws.
  3. Take a practice test to see how far each skill is from that target.
  4. Plan your study time around the weakest skill, since every skill must meet its own minimum.

Frequently asked questions

Is CELPIP 8 a good score?

It is well above the Express Entry minimum, but CLB 9 is worth noticeably more CRS points, so many candidates with 8s aim for 9.

Is there a pass or fail in CELPIP?

No. You get a level for each skill, and each program decides which level it needs.
