How Many Times Can You Retake CELPIP? Limits, Waiting Time and Fees

By Natania · Booking and test day · Published · 4 min read

If your CELPIP result is one level short, the first question is usually whether you can take the test again, and how soon. You can retake CELPIP as many times as you need, but each attempt is a full test at the full fee, and CELPIP limits how close together you can book sessions. This post covers the official retake rules, what a retake costs, when a re-evaluation makes more sense, and how to make the next attempt count. Paragon updates its policies, so check the current Retake Policy on the official CELPIP website before you book.

How many times can I take the CELPIP test?

As many times as you like. CELPIP does not cap the number of attempts; the limits are on timing and cost, because every attempt is a new registration at the full test fee.

IRCC does not publish a limit on attempts either. It asks for a valid result that meets your program's requirements, so an earlier lower score does not count against you.

How long do I have to wait before retaking CELPIP?

CELPIP's Retake Policy lets you register for no more than one test session within five calendar days, and registrations that break the rule can be cancelled by Paragon. The window has changed before (it was four calendar days in 2024), so check the current policy.

In practice the wait is longer, because results take about 3–4 business days. Most people should wait for their score report, see which skills fell short, and then book once their practice shows those skills have moved.

Can I retake only one section of CELPIP?

No. CELPIP has no single-skill retake: you sit the whole test again, all four skills in one sitting of about three hours, even if only Speaking or Reading fell short.

IELTS offers One Skill Retake, but IRCC does not accept it for programs such as Express Entry, so for Canadian PR both tests mean a full retake.

Which CELPIP result does IRCC use if I take it more than once?

The one you choose to submit, as long as it is still valid: IRCC accepts results for two years from the test date. You use the four scores from that single result and cannot combine your best skills from different attempts.

So a retake can only help: if it goes worse, you keep using the earlier result until it expires. The catch is that every skill has to reach your target on the same attempt.

How much does a CELPIP retake cost?

The same as the first attempt: there is no retake discount. When we checked in October 2026 the CELPIP-General fee in Canada was a little under CAD $300 plus tax.

SituationRule
RetakeFull test, full fee, no limit on attempts
Gap between sessionsNo more than one test session within five calendar days
Cancel 7+ calendar days before the test50% refund
Cancel less than 7 days beforeNo refund
Transfer to another dateAt least 7 days before; first transfer free, then CAD $50 plus tax

If you booked a retake and your practice shows you are not ready, transferring a week or more ahead is usually better than sitting the test and paying again.

Should I ask for a re-evaluation instead of retaking?

Only for Writing or Speaking, and only when your result is well below what your practice showed. Listening and Reading are scored by computer, so a re-evaluation is unlikely to change them.

  • Apply within six months of your test date through your CELPIP account.
  • You pay a fee for each skill you choose; it is refunded for any skill whose level changes.
  • Each skill can be re-evaluated only once, and a request cannot be cancelled.
  • Results come back in about one to two weeks.

How do I make my next CELPIP attempt count?

Change your preparation before you change your test date. Most people who retake without a new plan get the same levels again.

  1. Read your score report and list each skill below your target.
  2. For Writing and Speaking, check which dimension is weak: content, vocabulary, readability or listenability, or task fulfillment.
  3. Spend most of your study time on the weakest skill, using the real task types and timing.
  4. Take a full timed mock test, all four skills in one sitting.
  5. Book when every skill meets your target in practice, with a little margin in the weakest one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book my CELPIP retake before I get my results?

Yes, as long as the new session is outside the minimum gap in CELPIP's Retake Policy. It is usually wiser to wait for your score report so you know which skills to work on.

Does a lower score on a retake replace my earlier result?

No. Each result stands on its own, and you can submit whichever valid result serves you best.

Is the CELPIP-General LS retake policy the same?

The same registration rules apply. CELPIP-General LS is accepted only for Canadian citizenship, so make sure it is the test you need before you book.
