NARRATOR: A Guelph university student has turned his daily bike rides into a lifeline for dozens of local seniors. Twenty-year-old Marcus Bell began delivering groceries last winter after his grandmother, who no longer drives, admitted she had been skipping meals rather than walking to the store on icy sidewalks. At first, Bell simply picked up her weekly order along with his own. Before long, neighbouring residents were requesting the same favour. Bell now completes approximately thirty deliveries a week, pulling a trailer that he built himself from an old baby stroller and some plywood. He charges nothing for the service, although several customers insist on paying him in homemade cookies. Bell admits the hills and the weather are not always easy, and in February a snowstorm forced him to borrow his roommate's car for an entire week. A local grocery store recently learned of his work and has offered to donate a second trailer and cover repairs to his bicycle. Bell, who is studying nutrition, hopes to recruit other students so that the deliveries can continue after he graduates next spring.
