Read the following passage:

Paragraph A

Extremophiles are organisms that thrive in extreme environments where most life forms cannot survive. These remarkable creatures have adapted to live in conditions that were once thought to be inhospitable, such as extreme temperatures, high pressure, high salinity, and extreme pH levels. Extremophiles are found in various domains of life, including bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. Their unique adaptations have made them subjects of intense scientific interest, particularly in the fields of astrobiology and biotechnology.

Paragraph B

Thermophiles are a type of extremophile that can survive in extremely hot environments. Some species, like Strain 121, can grow at temperatures up to 121°C (250°F). On the opposite end of the spectrum, psychrophiles thrive in extremely cold environments, such as the waters of Antarctica. These organisms have evolved specialized enzymes and cell membranes that allow them to function at temperatures where most proteins would denature. Halophiles, another group of extremophiles, live in highly saline environments like the Dead Sea, where they have developed mechanisms to balance the osmotic pressure caused by the high salt concentrations.

Paragraph C

One of the most intriguing extremophiles is Deinococcus radiodurans, nicknamed "Conan the Bacterium." This microorganism can withstand radiation levels 1,000 times greater than what would kill a human. It achieves this feat through multiple copies of its genome and highly efficient DNA repair mechanisms. This ability has led scientists to explore its potential applications in radioactive waste cleanup and long-term data storage. Another fascinating extremophile is Ferroplasma acidiphilum, which thrives in highly acidic environments with pH levels as low as 0. These organisms have evolved specialized cell membranes and proteins that allow them to maintain a neutral internal pH despite the extreme acidity of their surroundings.

Paragraph D

The study of extremophiles has significant implications for our understanding of the origins of life on Earth and the potential for life on other planets. The discovery of these organisms has expanded our conception of the habitable zone and the conditions under which life can exist. Astrobiologists are particularly interested in extremophiles as they search for potential life forms on other celestial bodies, such as Mars or the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Additionally, extremophiles have proven valuable in biotechnology applications. Enzymes derived from these organisms, known as extremozymes, are used in various industrial processes due to their ability to function under extreme conditions where conventional enzymes would fail.

Paragraph E

Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. Extremophiles are found across different biological classifications.
  2. Some extremophiles can survive in both extremely hot and cold environments.
  3. Certain extremophiles have developed resistance to high levels of radiation.
  4. The study of extremophiles has applications in space exploration.
  5. Extremophiles have evolved special cellular structures to survive in their environments.
  6. All known extremophiles are unicellular organisms.
  7. Extremophiles have commercial applications in industry.
  8. Some extremophiles can survive in environments with very high salt concentrations.
  9. Extremophiles have been found living on other planets.
