The question

The local community council is choosing a location for a new farmers market. You have been given two options. Your task is to decide which location would be best for the market. Once you make your choice, you will need to persuade others why your option is better by comparing both locations.

Option 1: Central Park Area

-Central location with high foot traffic

-Plenty of parking available nearby

-Close to a bus stop and subway station

-Estimated cost: $40,000 for setup

-Expected completion time: 3 months

Option 2: Riverside Park Area

-More spacious with room for expansion

-Scenic and peaceful environment

-Parking available, but limited

-Estimated cost: $30,000 for setup

-Expected completion time: 4 months

Your Community Member’s Choice:

-A smaller downtown street location

-Limited space for vendors

-High rental costs

-Few parking spots

-Estimated cost: $20,000 for setup

-Expected completion time: 2 months

Excellent answer (transcript): around CLB 11–12

Thank you for your suggestion regarding the downtown street location, but I strongly believe that the Central Park Area would be the most suitable location for the farmers market. The Central Park Area offers unparalleled visibility due to its central location, which ensures high foot traffic and increased potential for sales. Unlike Riverside Park, which has limited parking and will take longer to complete, Central Park’s ample parking and accessibility by both bus and subway make it much more convenient for customers and vendors alike. Additionally, while the Riverside Park Area provides a scenic environment, its limited space for vendors could constrain the market's growth. On the other hand, Central Park offers a perfect balance of accessibility, convenience, and potential for future expansion. Although it has a higher setup cost, the advantages far outweigh the downsides. In comparison to the downtown location, which has high rental costs and limited space, the Central Park Area is clearly the better choice for our community's needs.

Good answer (transcript): around CLB 7–8

I understand the appeal of the Riverside Park Area, but I believe the Central Park Area is the better option for the farmers market. First, it has a much more central location, which means more foot traffic, bringing in more potential customers. With plenty of nearby parking and easy access by bus or subway, it’s much more convenient for people to visit. While Riverside Park offers a peaceful environment, its limited parking and slower completion time make it less practical. The downtown street location also seems like a poor choice because it lacks space and has high rental costs. Considering these factors, I’m confident the Central Park Area is the superior choice.

Basic answer (transcript): around CLB 4–5

I think the best choice is the Central Park Area. It's in the middle of the city, so more people will see the market and visit it. Also, there are a lot of parking spots, and it is easy to get there by bus or subway. The Riverside Park Area is nice, but it’s harder to park there, and it takes longer to finish. The downtown street location is too small and has too many problems. I believe the Central Park Area is the best for the market.
