Am I Ready for CELPIP? How to Check Your Level Before You Book

By Natania · Study tips · Published · 4 min read

The CELPIP-General test costs close to CAD $300, and a missed target can mean paying again and losing weeks on your immigration timeline. So before you book, it is worth answering one question honestly: am I ready? The surest way to find out is to sit a full practice test under real conditions and look at your level in each section. You can do that today, free, without creating an account. CELPass is an independent practice platform, not affiliated with CELPIP or Paragon Testing Enterprises.

How do I know if I am ready for CELPIP?

You are ready when a full practice test, taken under real test conditions, puts you at or above your target CLB in every section, ideally on two tests in a row. One good score can be luck; two show a level you can repeat on test day. The quickest way to get that first reading is a free full mock test.

  • Ready to book: at or above your target in all four sections on two full mocks.
  • Nearly there: one section a level below. Book a date 3 to 6 weeks out and practise that section daily.
  • Not yet: two or more sections below, or any section two levels short. Practise first and book once your mocks catch up, so you pay the fee once.

Can I check my CELPIP level for free?

Yes. CELPass Mock 1 is a full CELPIP-style test you can start right now with no sign-up. Listening and Reading are scored the moment you finish, with a CLB for each. Create a free account when you reach Writing, and your Writing and Speaking are scored by AI too, still free and with no card.

Is a free mock test accurate enough to decide?

It is a realistic first check. CELPass mocks are built by experienced CELPIP teachers, with AI assisting, and follow the official CELPIP-General tests in format, timing, question style and difficulty. In our internal survey of 1,856 students who took the CELPIP test, 97% said CELPass mock tests are similar to the official test. Any practice score is still an estimate, not an official CELPIP result, which is why two tests in a row tell you more than one.

Speaking and Writing estimates come as a CLB range rather than one number, because a single answer is limited evidence. If your range straddles your target, treat that section as "nearly there".

How should I take the free mock so the result means something?

Take it like test day. A mock done in pieces, with pauses or a dictionary open, will flatter your score and send you to the test too early.

  1. Use a laptop or desktop and headphones, in a quiet room.
  2. Set aside about two hours for Listening and Reading in one sitting, then do Writing and Speaking the same day if you can.
  3. Keep to every timer and don't pause; each Listening recording plays once, as on the real test.
  4. Don't look anything up until you have finished.
  5. Write down your target CLB for each section before you start, so you judge the result against it.

What should I do with my result?

Compare each section with your target and decide by the weakest one, because most immigration goals need the minimum in every skill, not on average.

  • At target everywhere: book your test, then take one more full mock in the last week as a check.
  • One section short: look at the mistakes the report shows for that section and practise that task type every day; take another mock in 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Several sections short: start with your weakest skill, use short daily practice rather than repeated full mocks, and take your next mock in about a month.

When should I book the CELPIP test?

Book once a full mock puts you at your target, or within one level in a single section, and leave yourself 3 to 6 weeks: enough time to fix that last gap, short enough to keep your level fresh. Popular test centres fill up, so check dates early even if you book later.
