15 Common CELPIP Mistakes and How to Fix Them
By Natania · Study tips · Published · 4 min read
Most points lost in CELPIP are not lost to hard vocabulary or tricky grammar. They are lost to the same handful of habits: studying the wrong section, missing part of a prompt, running out of time, or memorising answers that do not fit. These are the fifteen we see most often, grouped by where they happen, with the fix for each.
Mistakes in how you prepare
| Mistake | Why it costs points | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Splitting study time evenly across the four skills | Most requirements apply to every skill, so your lowest section decides the result. Even time keeps the gap the same. | Give about half your time to the section with the biggest gap and keep the others familiar. |
| 2. Practising without reviewing | Answering more questions repeats the same errors. Improvement comes from understanding why an answer was wrong. | Spend at least as long reviewing as answering, and log each mistake with the correct version. |
| 3. Never practising under real timing | Each Reading part and Writing task has its own timer. Untimed practice hides the problem until test day. | Use the real timers from your first week, even for single tasks. |
| 4. Retaking the same practice test | You remember the answers, so the score rises without your level rising. | Use fresh material whenever you want a reliable reading of your level. |
Listening mistakes
| Mistake | Why it costs points | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 5. Writing full sentences in your notes | While you write, the audio moves on and you miss the next detail. The audio plays only once. | Note only who, what, when and why, with short words and symbols. |
| 6. Choosing the answer that repeats words from the audio | Wrong options often reuse exact words; the right one often says the same idea differently. | Listen for meaning and for changes of mind, such as "actually" or "on second thought". |
Reading mistakes
| Mistake | Why it costs points | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 7. Spending too long on one hard question | Unused time does not carry over to the next part, and time spent stuck is time taken from easier questions. | Pick your best answer, flag it in your head and move on. Return only if time is left in that part. |
| 8. Leaving answers blank | There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is always a lost chance. | Answer every question before the part's timer ends. |
| 9. Matching words instead of meaning | Trap options copy phrases from the passage but change the condition, the time or the person. | Check every condition in the option against the text before you choose it. |
Writing mistakes
| Mistake | Why it costs points | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 10. Missing one of the three email points | Task Fulfillment checks that you covered every part of the prompt. A missing point limits your level however good the English is. | Number the points in your plan and tick each one when it is in the email. |
| 11. Not choosing a clear option in the survey | Sitting on the fence makes your position unclear and weakens Task Fulfillment and Content/Coherence. | State your choice in the first sentence and support it with two developed reasons. |
| 12. Skipping the final check | There is no spell checker, and small errors add up in Readability. | Leave about three minutes in each task to reread for spelling, missing words and verb endings. |
Speaking mistakes
| Mistake | Why it costs points | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 13. Reciting a memorised answer | Raters score how well you respond to the actual prompt. A script rarely fits it, and recited speech is easy to hear. | Learn a short structure for each task and fill it with new content every time. |
| 14. Stopping early | Silence at the end means fewer ideas and less evidence of your range. | Plan two or three points in the preparation time and add an example to each until the timer ends. |
| 15. Racing to sound fluent | Speaking too fast causes more errors and makes you harder to follow, which hurts Listenability. | Speak at a steady pace with short pauses between ideas. Record yourself and listen back. |
How to find your own top three
Everyone makes some of these mistakes, but only two or three of them are costing you most of your points. Keep an error log for a week: the task, what went wrong and the fix. Then count. The mistakes that appear most often are the ones to work on, and the rest can wait.
CELPass labels the mistakes in every scored Speaking and Writing answer and every Listening and Reading trap you fall for, then turns the frequent ones into short daily drills, so you can see your top three without counting by hand.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common CELPIP mistake?
Spending equal time on all four skills. Because requirements usually apply to every skill, your lowest section decides the result, so it should get most of your study time.
Is there negative marking in CELPIP?
No. A wrong answer in Listening or Reading does not lose points, so answer every question before the timer ends.
