CELPIP for Canadian Citizenship: CELPIP-General LS and CLB 4
By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · Updated · 5 min read
Most adult applicants for Canadian citizenship must show they can speak and understand English or French at a basic level. CELPIP-General LS is a shorter version of CELPIP built for this purpose. This post explains the requirement, the test and how to prepare. Citizenship rules can change, so always check the current requirements on the IRCC website before you book or apply.
What CELPIP score do I need for Canadian citizenship?
You need CLB 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking, which is a CELPIP level of 4 or higher in those two sections. Reading and Writing are not part of the citizenship language requirement.
CLB 4 is a basic, functional level: you can take part in short everyday conversations, understand simple instructions and questions, and talk about familiar topics using common words and basic grammar.
Who has to prove their language level for citizenship?
Applicants aged 18 to 54 on the day they sign their application generally need to provide proof of language ability. Applicants outside that age range do not need to, but check IRCC's current rules for your situation.
IRCC also accepts some other kinds of proof, such as certain education completed in English or French or certain government-funded language training results. The accepted list and its details are on the IRCC website, so check it before booking a test you may not need.
What is CELPIP-General LS?
CELPIP-General LS is a version of CELPIP with only the Listening and Speaking sections. It takes about one hour, compared with about three hours for the full CELPIP-General, and it is intended for citizenship applications.
| CELPIP-General LS | CELPIP-General | |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | Listening and Speaking | Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking |
| Length | About 1 hour | About 3 hours |
| Main use | Canadian citizenship | Permanent residence and other immigration programs |
| Scoring | Levels M–12, the same as CLB | Levels M–12, the same as CLB |
CELPIP-General LS cannot be used for permanent residence, because those programs require all four skills. If you might need a result for both purposes, check IRCC's list of accepted tests before choosing which one to book.
What is in the Listening and Speaking sections?
The Listening and Speaking sections follow the same format as in CELPIP-General: six Listening parts with multiple-choice questions, and eight Speaking tasks recorded on the computer.
- Listening: everyday conversations, a news item, a video discussion and a recording with viewpoints. You hear each recording once and answer multiple-choice questions.
- Speaking: eight short tasks, such as giving advice, describing a past experience and describing a picture. Each has 30–60 seconds to prepare and 60–90 seconds to speak.
- There is no examiner. You speak into a headset microphone and your answers are recorded and rated later.
Is CLB 4 hard to reach?
For someone who uses English regularly at work or in daily life, CLB 4 is usually within reach, but the format can still catch people out. Freezing during preparation time, giving very short answers or misunderstanding a question can pull a result down.
Here is an original CELPass example for Speaking Task 2 (talk about a time you helped someone) at a level that should comfortably show basic ability: "Last winter, my neighbour's car got stuck in the snow. I saw him from my window, so I went outside with a shovel. We cleared the snow together for about twenty minutes, and then he could drive out. He was very happy and later he brought us some cookies." It is simple, but it is clear, in the past tense and answers the question.
Is the language test the same as the citizenship test?
No. The language requirement and the citizenship knowledge test are separate. CELPIP shows your English level; the citizenship test checks what you know about Canada's history, geography, government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
IRCC publishes the official study guide for the citizenship test. Check the IRCC website for who has to take it and how it works. Preparing for both at the same time is common: practising your speaking by explaining what you have learned about Canada is good practice for CELPIP Speaking, too.
How long are CELPIP results valid for citizenship?
They do not expire for citizenship: IRCC accepts expired CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS results, as long as Listening and Speaking are 4 or higher. The two-year limit applies to permanent residence, not citizenship.
CELPIP results are usually posted to your online account within about a week of the test, so plan your test date with enough time before you submit your application.
How should I prepare for CELPIP-General LS?
Learn the format of all six Listening parts and all eight Speaking tasks, then practise with real timing. Knowing exactly what each task asks for removes most of the stress on test day.
- Try Paragon's official free practice tests to see the screens and timing.
- Practise each Speaking task with a timer and record yourself. Listen back for long pauses and unfinished answers.
- Use a simple structure for every answer: one sentence that answers the question, two supporting details, one closing sentence.
- For Listening, practise with Canadian radio, podcasts and news so the accents and topics feel familiar.
- Book the test once you are comfortably above CLB 4 in practice, not just at it.
Do not skip the Speaking tasks that feel unusual, such as describing a picture or predicting what will happen next. They are short, but an answer that stops after one sentence gives the raters very little to score, even at a basic level.
The free CELPass diagnostic gives a predicted CLB for each section in about 25 minutes, and the question bank has practice for every Listening part and Speaking task. CELPass is an independent practice site, not affiliated with Paragon.
