CELPIP FAQ: Quick Answers About the CELPIP Test

By CELPass Editorial Team · Updated

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask most about CELPIP. Rules and fees can change, so confirm anything important on the official CELPIP website and with IRCC.

What is the CELPIP test?

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a computer-delivered English test accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. Since August 2025, Australia also accepts CELPIP-General for visa applications.

It is run by Paragon Testing Enterprises. CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking; CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking.

What does the CELPIP test consist of?

CELPIP-General has four sections taken in one sitting, in this order: Listening (6 parts), Reading (4 parts), Writing (2 tasks) and Speaking (8 tasks). Listening and Reading are multiple choice; Writing and Speaking are rated by trained raters. Each section gets its own level from M to 12.

SectionParts or tasks
ListeningProblem solving, daily life conversation, listening for information, news item, discussion (video), viewpoints
ReadingCorrespondence, applying a diagram, reading for information, viewpoints
WritingWriting an email, responding to survey questions
SpeakingGiving advice, personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing and persuading, a difficult situation, expressing opinions, describing an unusual situation

CELPIP-General LS has only the Listening and Speaking sections. The test may also include unscored questions used for research, and you cannot tell which ones they are.

How many questions are on the CELPIP test?

Listening and Reading each have 38 scored multiple-choice questions. Writing has 2 tasks and Speaking has 8 tasks. Some tests also include extra unscored questions used for research, and you cannot tell which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts.

Is the CELPIP Speaking test face to face?

No. There is no examiner. You answer 8 short tasks by speaking into a headset microphone, and your recordings are rated later by trained raters. Each task gives you a short preparation time, then a speaking time, with a timer on screen.

Can I take notes during the CELPIP test?

Yes. You are given scrap paper for notes during the test. Only your answers are scored, not your notes. Short notes help most in Listening, where every recording plays only once: write names, numbers, decisions and opinions, not full sentences.

Can I go back and change my answers in CELPIP?

Within a Reading part, yes: you can change answers while that part's timer is running. Once a part ends you cannot return to it, and unused time does not carry over. In Listening, each recording plays only once and you cannot rewind it.

Are wrong answers penalised in CELPIP?

No. In Listening and Reading only correct answers count, so always choose an option before the timer runs out. A reasoned guess costs nothing, while leaving a question blank guarantees zero for it.

Is there a spell checker in CELPIP Writing?

No. The Writing screen shows a word counter and basic cut, copy and paste, but no spell checker. Leave a few minutes at the end of each task to reread for spelling. Canadian spelling (colour, neighbour, centre) is natural, but spelling words correctly and consistently matters most.

Does CELPIP use Canadian English?

Yes. The situations are everyday Canadian ones, such as workplaces, neighbours and community events, and you hear Canadian accents. You do not need to know anything about Canada itself. Practising with Canadian radio and podcasts helps you get used to the accents.

How long is the CELPIP test?

CELPIP-General takes about three hours, with all four sections completed in one sitting. CELPIP-General LS, which has only Listening and Speaking, takes about one hour.

SectionTime
Listeningabout 47–55 minutes
Readingabout 55–60 minutes
Writingabout 53–60 minutes
Speakingabout 15–20 minutes

What order are the CELPIP sections in?

Listening, then Reading, then Writing, then Speaking, all on the same day and on the same computer.

Which CELPIP test do I need: General or General LS?

Take CELPIP-General for permanent residence (Express Entry, provincial nominee and most other economic programs). CELPIP-General LS is only for Canadian citizenship applications, which require Listening and Speaking.

How much does the CELPIP test cost?

When we checked in October 2026, the official CELPIP website listed CELPIP-General at a little under CAD $300 plus tax and CELPIP-General LS at a little under CAD $200 plus tax. Prices outside Canada differ, so treat the price on the booking page as the real one.

How do I book the CELPIP test?

Create an account on the official CELPIP website, choose your test type, pick a location and date, enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID, and pay. You should then receive a confirmation.

Can I take CELPIP online at home?

Only CELPIP Online can be taken at home, and IRCC does not accept it for permanent residence, Express Entry or citizenship. For those, you must take CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS at a test centre.

What ID do I need for the CELPIP test?

Bring an ID from the official CELPIP website's list of accepted documents, and make sure the name in your CELPIP account matches it exactly, including middle names. A mismatch is one of the few things that can stop you from testing.

Is CELPIP accepted outside Canada?

Yes, in Australia. Since August 2025, Australia accepts CELPIP-General for visa applications, including skilled and graduate visas. Outside Canada and Australia, check with the organisation first, because CELPIP was built for Canadian immigration and is not widely used elsewhere.

How is CELPIP scored?

Each section gets a CELPIP level from M to 12, and each level equals the same CLB level: CELPIP 9 is CLB 9. Listening and Reading are marked by correct answers; Writing and Speaking are rated on four dimensions each.

What CELPIP score do I need?

Federal Skilled Worker needs at least CLB 7 in every section, citizenship needs CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking, and many Express Entry candidates aim for CLB 9 in every section to maximise their CRS points.

Is there a passing score for CELPIP?

No. CELPIP has no passing score. You get a level from M to 12 in each section, and whether that is enough depends on what you are applying for: for example, CLB 7 in every section for Federal Skilled Worker or CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking for citizenship.

Is CELPIP hard?

It depends on your target. CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking for citizenship is very different from CLB 9 in all four sections for Express Entry. Many test takers find Writing or Speaking the hardest to push to a high level, because small problems with structure, tone or a missed point hold the score back.

When do I get my CELPIP results?

Results are posted to your online CELPIP account, usually within about a week of the test. Paragon also offers faster results for an extra fee.

How long are CELPIP results valid?

IRCC accepts CELPIP results for two years from the test date, and they must still be valid on the day you submit your application.

Can I retake CELPIP?

Yes. You can book the test again as many times as you need, and you choose which valid result to submit to IRCC. Each attempt is paid separately, so it is worth practising until you consistently reach your target first.

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?

Neither is easier for everyone. CELPIP is fully computer-based, uses Canadian accents and records your speaking on the computer; IELTS General Training has a face-to-face speaking test and is accepted in more countries. IRCC treats the same CLB level from either test equally.

How should I prepare for CELPIP?

Find your current level in each section, spend most of your time on the section furthest from your target, and practise every task in the real format and timing. Writing and Speaking improve fastest with feedback on each answer.

Is CELPass an official CELPIP website?

No. CELPass is an independent practice platform with AI-scored CELPIP practice tests and mock exams. It is not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises, which owns CELPIP.
