Can You Take CELPIP Online at Home?
By Natania · Booking and test day · Published · 5 min read
Many people search for a way to take CELPIP from home, especially if the nearest test centre is far away. There is an online, at-home version of CELPIP, but it is not the one most people need. This post explains what CELPIP Online is, why it will not work for immigration or citizenship, which test to book instead, and how to get the benefits of practising at home without risking your application. Test policies and IRCC rules change, so confirm the details on the official CELPIP website and IRCC's website before you book.
Can I take CELPIP online at home?
Yes, but only CELPIP Online, and IRCC does not accept CELPIP Online for permanent residence, Express Entry or citizenship. For those, you must take CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS at a test centre.
CELPIP Online is taken on your own computer with online proctoring, in the same format as the centre-based test, and at the time of writing it is only available in Canada. Some organisations, such as certain regulatory bodies or employers, may accept it for their own purposes. If you are thinking of using it for anything, check with the organisation first that it accepts CELPIP Online specifically.
| You need the result for | Can you use CELPIP Online? | Book instead |
|---|---|---|
| Express Entry or other permanent residence programs | No | CELPIP-General at a test centre |
| Canadian citizenship | No | CELPIP-General LS (or General) at a test centre |
| Australian visas | No | CELPIP-General at a test centre |
| A regulator, employer or other organisation | Only if that organisation says so | Ask the organisation |
Why doesn't IRCC accept CELPIP Online?
IRCC sets its own list of approved tests and conditions, and for CELPIP it accepts the centre-based CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS. An at-home result is not on that list, however good the score is.
In practice this means an at-home result will not count, and you would need to pay for and take the centre-based test anyway. Before you pay for any test, read the language requirements for your exact program on IRCC's website. The same caution applies in Australia, where Home Affairs accepts only tests taken in person at a centre for results from 7 August 2025.
Which CELPIP test should I book instead?
Book CELPIP-General at a test centre for permanent residence and Express Entry, and CELPIP-General LS at a test centre if you only need it for citizenship.
Both are taken on a computer at the centre, so the experience is closer to an online test than many people expect: you listen through a headset, type your Writing answers and record your Speaking answers into a microphone. There is no face-to-face interview. The difference is that the centre handles the room, the equipment and the identity checks.
What if there is no test centre near me?
Look at every centre within reasonable travel distance, book early enough to find a date that works, and plan the trip as part of your test budget.
- Search the official booking page for all centres in your province or country, not only the closest city.
- Morning start times can mean an early departure or a night nearby; factor in travel time and cost.
- Seats in smaller centres can be limited, so check dates several weeks ahead.
- If you are outside Canada, check the centre list for your country on the official CELPIP website.
How can I simulate the CELPIP test at home?
Take a full timed mock test on your computer, in one sitting, with a headset and a quiet room, so that test day feels like something you have already done.
The real test takes about three hours for CELPIP-General, with Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in that order. Most people practise each section separately and never sit all four together, so fatigue in Speaking at the end comes as a surprise. A full mock test copies the order, the timers and the computer-based format.
- Book a three-hour block at the same time of day as your real test.
- Use a headset with a microphone, as you will at the centre.
- Put your phone in another room and do not pause the timers.
- Type your Writing answers without spell check, since the test has none.
- Speak your answers aloud and listen back afterwards; add some background noise, because others will be speaking around you at the centre.
- Review your weakest section the next day and plan the following week around it.
Can I prepare for CELPIP entirely online?
Yes. Preparation can happen entirely online even though the official test for immigration cannot: practice questions, timed tasks, feedback on Writing and Speaking and full mock tests all work well at home.
Start with a diagnostic to see your level in each skill, then practise the task types where you lose the most points. Writing and Speaking in particular improve fastest with feedback on real answers, because it is hard to judge your own responses against the rating criteria.
What does a home rehearsal not prepare me for?
A home mock test covers the content, timing and format, but not the centre itself: the check-in, the unfamiliar room, the shared space and the nerves of the real day. Plan for those separately.
- Check-in takes time: ID checks, a photo and locker storage happen before the test starts, so arrive early.
- You cannot bring notes, water or your phone into the test room, so practise without them.
- Other test takers will start Speaking at different moments; practise answering while someone nearby is talking.
- The headset and keyboard will not be your own; a few minutes of adjustment is normal.
- Nerves are stronger on the real day, which is why a full rehearsal at home is so useful: the tasks themselves will feel familiar.
Reading about the day in advance removes most of the surprises, and a checklist the night before covers the rest.
