How to Read Faster in CELPIP Reading (and Why Your Score Stays Low)
By Iris · Reading · Published · 3 min read
CELPIP Reading gives you about an hour for four parts and 38 questions, and many people run out of time in Part 4 or rush the last passage. Reading faster is not about moving your eyes quicker. It is about reading with a purpose, knowing which parts of a passage matter for the question, and not rereading what you already understood. This post covers the techniques, and the other reasons Reading scores stay low.
How can I read faster during the CELPIP test?
Skim the passage once for its structure, read each question before searching for its answer, and scan for names, numbers and keywords instead of rereading everything. Give each part a time budget, and move on when it runs out.
- Skim for 30–60 seconds: who is writing, to whom, and what each paragraph is about.
- Read one question, then go to the paragraph it most likely refers to.
- Scan for the names, numbers and keywords in the question, and read closely only around them.
- Answer, and move on; mark a question to return to rather than staying stuck.
- Keep about a minute at the end of each part to check flagged questions.
Why do I keep getting low scores in CELPIP Reading?
Usually one of four reasons: running out of time, falling for distractors, missing what the writer implies, or vocabulary gaps in Part 4's viewpoints passage. Your wrong answers will show which one is yours.
| Pattern in your wrong answers | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly at the end of a part | Time | Strict time budget per part; skim first |
| Options that repeat passage words | Distractors | Check meaning, not matching words |
| 'The writer suggests…' questions | Inference | Ask why the writer says it, not just what |
| Part 4 especially | Vocabulary and long argument | Read opinion articles; map each viewpoint |
Should I read the questions before the passage?
Skim the passage briefly first, then go question by question. Reading all the questions first takes time and is hard to remember; a quick skim tells you where things are, so each question becomes a short search.
How do I practise reading faster without losing accuracy?
Time yourself, cut the time gradually, and stop cutting when your accuracy drops. Speed only helps if your score rises with it.
- Week 1: do one Reading part a day with no time limit, and note how long it took.
- Week 2: cut that time by about 10%, and check that your score holds.
- Week 3: do full 38-question Reading tests in the real time limit.
- Every day: read 15 minutes of Canadian news or opinion pieces in English, without a dictionary for the first read.
What vocabulary should I learn for CELPIP Reading?
Everyday Canadian topics (housing, work, community services, travel, health) and the words writers use to show attitude, such as reluctant, sceptical, advocate and concede. Attitude words matter most in Part 4.

Roughly a quarter of the time each, with a little more for Parts 3 and 4 if you are faster at Parts 1 and 2. Use your own practice times to set your budget.

No. Wrong and blank answers both score zero, so answer every question.
