When Does a CELPIP Score Expire? How Long It Is Valid

By Natania · Booking and test day · Published · Updated · 5 min read

A CELPIP score report does not carry an expiry date of its own. Instead, each organisation that uses CELPIP decides how old a result it will accept. For Canadian permanent residence the rule is two years (citizenship accepts expired results), but the details of which date counts and when the result has to be valid catch people out. This post explains the IRCC rule, how it fits with Express Entry and citizenship, and where other organisations differ. Rules change, so always confirm on IRCC's website, or with the organisation that will use your result, before you rely on it.

How long is a CELPIP score valid for IRCC?

IRCC accepts CELPIP results for two years from the test date, and the result must still be valid on the day you submit your application.

This applies to permanent residence applications, including Express Entry. Citizenship is different: IRCC accepts expired CELPIP results there. For PR, a result that was valid when you started your paperwork but expires before you submit does not count, so the two-year window has to cover the submission date itself.

Which date counts: the test date or the results date?

The test date. The two years run from the day you sat the test, not the day the results were released or the day you downloaded the report.

Your test date is printed on your score report. Write down the date two years later and treat it as your hard deadline for submitting any application that uses that result. If you have taken CELPIP more than once, each result has its own test date and its own two-year window; you choose which valid result to use.

How does validity work with an Express Entry profile?

Your result must be valid when you create your profile and still valid when you submit your permanent residence application after an invitation, so a result close to the end of its two years can expire while you wait in the pool.

An Express Entry profile can stay in the pool for up to 12 months, and after an invitation you have a limited time to submit your full application. If your test result would expire before that application goes in, you need a new valid result to submit, and you should check IRCC's current guidance on what to do with your profile. The safe plan is to look at both dates side by side: when your test result expires and when you might realistically submit.

  • If your result has less than a year left when you enter the pool, consider retesting before it lapses.
  • A new, higher result can also raise your CRS score, so update your profile when you get it.
  • Never submit an application with a result that has expired, even by a day.

How long is a CELPIP score valid for citizenship?

It does not expire for citizenship. IRCC accepts expired CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS results, and says there is no expiration date for third-party language test results for citizenship applicants.

Applicants aged 18 to 54 need CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking. CELPIP-General LS covers exactly that, and a CELPIP-General result also works because it includes Listening and Speaking, however old it is. So the CELPIP result from your Express Entry application can usually be your citizenship proof, as long as Listening and Speaking are 4 or higher; you need CELPIP-General LS only if you have no accepted proof.

How long is a CELPIP score valid for Australia?

Australia sets its own rules, and they depend on the visa. Most skilled visas accept results from the three years before you are invited or apply, and some visas, such as the 485, need a more recent test. Check the Home Affairs website for your visa before you rely on an older result.

Do other organisations accept older CELPIP results?

Each organisation sets its own rule. Professional regulators, employers and schools may accept results of a different age, or only results from a particular version of the test, so ask them directly.

Get the answer in writing if you can, and check whether they need an official report sent from CELPIP or a copy you download yourself. Do not assume the IRCC rule applies elsewhere, or that another organisation's more relaxed rule applies to IRCC.

What should I do if my CELPIP score is about to expire?

Book a new test early enough that the new result arrives before the old one expires, which in practice means about two to three months before the expiry date.

That window allows for finding a seat, about a week for results and time for a retake if the new score comes in lower than the old one. Your English may have changed since the first test, so take a timed mock test before booking to check you can still reach the level you need. If your old score was just above a CRS threshold, a short refresher on your weakest skill is worth it.

Can I use an older, higher CELPIP score instead of a newer one?

Yes, if the older result is still within two years of its test date when you submit. IRCC does not require your most recent result; it requires a valid one, and you choose which valid result to report.

This matters when a retake comes back lower than your first attempt. As long as the first result has not expired, you can keep using it. Once it expires, though, only the newer results that are still valid count, so do not rely on a high old score that runs out before your application goes in. When you have several results, keep a simple note of each test date, its expiry date and its levels in each skill, so you always know which one you can use and how long you have left.

  • Report the same result consistently across your profile and application.
  • Do not mix skills from different test dates; each result is used as a whole.
  • Check IRCC's current instructions if you are unsure which result to enter.
