Switching from IELTS to CELPIP for Express Entry: Is It Worth It?
By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 4 min read
Many Express Entry candidates take IELTS General Training first because it is the test they have heard of. Some then get stuck one band short in a single skill, often Listening, and start asking whether CELPIP would be easier. Sometimes it is; sometimes the gap is in their English and follows them to any test. This post explains why people switch, the CLB lines on each test, and how to try CELPIP without paying for a test you are not ready for. Confirm the current equivalency charts on the IRCC website before you book.
Why do people switch from IELTS to CELPIP?
Most often because of one IELTS skill that will not move, usually Listening at band 8.0 for CLB 9, or because the face-to-face Speaking test makes them nervous. CELPIP has no conversion and puts every skill's CLB 9 line at the same level, 9.
- IELTS Listening needs band 8.0 for CLB 9, a full band above the 7.0 the other skills need.
- Some people speak better to a microphone, with time to prepare, than to an examiner across a table.
- CELPIP is on a computer from start to finish, so you type your Writing answers instead of handwriting them on paper.
- CELPIP uses Canadian accents and everyday Canadian situations, which feel familiar if you already live here.
- CELPIP Listening and Reading are multiple choice only, with no spelling answers into gaps.
How do the CLB 7 and CLB 9 lines compare?
For CLB 9, IELTS General Training needs 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking; CELPIP needs 9 in every skill. For CLB 7, IELTS needs 6.0 in every skill and CELPIP needs 7.
| CLB | IELTS General Training | CELPIP-General |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.5 | 10 / 10 / 10 / 10 |
| 9 | 8.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 | 9 / 9 / 9 / 9 |
| 8 | 7.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 | 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 |
| 7 | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 | 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 |
The same CLB earns the same CRS points from either test. What changes is which skill is hardest for you to push over the line.
Who is switching most likely to help?
People who reach CLB 9 in three IELTS skills but are stuck at 7.5 in Listening, and people whose IELTS Speaking score is held back by nerves rather than by their English.
- Your IELTS Listening is 7.5 while the other skills are 7.0 or higher.
- Your Speaking falls apart in front of an examiner but is fine in everyday conversation.
- You type faster than you write by hand, and your IELTS Writing loses marks on time.
- You live in Canada and are used to the accents and situations CELPIP uses.
When should I stay with IELTS?
When the gap is in your English rather than the format, or when you are very close. Grammar errors in Writing or a narrow vocabulary in Speaking will cost you on CELPIP too, because CELPIP raters judge the same things.
- You are half a band short in a skill other than Listening, and know what to fix.
- You also need the result for another country or for study.
- You speak much better in a real conversation, where an examiner can react to you.
- Your Express Entry or provincial deadline is close and there is no time to learn a new format.
What changes when I prepare for CELPIP instead of IELTS?
The task types and timing. Your English carries over, but each CELPIP section has its own format that is worth a few weeks of practice.
| Skill | CELPIP-General | Main change from IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 6 parts, all multiple choice, each recording heard once | No gap-filling or spelling; more everyday conversations |
| Reading | 4 parts: a letter, a diagram, an information text, viewpoints | Multiple choice only; no sentence completion or matching headings |
| Writing | An email and a survey response, 150–200 words each, typed | Two shorter practical tasks instead of a letter and an essay |
| Speaking | 8 tasks recorded into a headset, 60–90 seconds each | No examiner; short preparation time before each answer |
How do I switch without wasting a test fee?
Measure your CELPIP level in each skill before you book, and book only when every skill is at your target in timed practice.
- Take the free CELPass diagnostic or a free official CELPIP practice test.
- Compare your weakest CELPIP skill with your weakest IELTS skill, both in CLB terms.
- If CELPIP looks closer, spend two to four weeks on its task types.
- Take a full timed mock test and book when every skill reaches your target.
- Keep your IELTS result: it stays valid for two years from the test date, and IRCC uses whichever single result you enter in your profile.
Frequently asked questions
Can I combine my IELTS and CELPIP scores for Express Entry?
No. Your profile uses the four scores from one test result, so you need your target in every skill on the same test.
Is CELPIP easier than IELTS for CLB 9?
Not for everyone. CELPIP asks for 9 in every skill, while IELTS sets Listening a band higher than the others. If Listening is your problem in IELTS, CELPIP may suit you better.
