NARRATOR: Residents of Sudbury, Ontario, can now borrow a cordless drill as easily as a mystery novel. The city's public library this week launched its new tool collection, roughly three hundred items ranging from ladders and pressure washers to sewing machines and snowshoes. The initiative was proposed by library technician Rachel Dumont, who noticed patrons repeatedly asking where to find equipment for one-time household projects. Dumont argues that the average power drill is operated for only a few minutes over its entire lifetime, making individual ownership both wasteful and needlessly expensive. Most of the inventory was donated by residents and a local hardware retailer, while the remainder was purchased with a provincial environmental grant. Borrowers must be at least eighteen, hold a valid library card and complete a brief online safety orientation. Items can be borrowed for one week, and, unlike books, late returns carry a penalty of $5 a day, a policy administrators describe as essential, since a missing tile saw can ruin a neighbour's weekend renovation. Within forty-eight hours of the launch, nearly every item had been reserved, and the waiting list for the carpet cleaner alone exceeded sixty names. Dumont hopes to expand the collection to two neighbourhood branches by spring.
