NARRATOR: A fifteen-year-old in Moncton, New Brunswick, has become something of a neighbourhood celebrity after transforming his family's driveway into a free bicycle repair stand. Every Saturday since May, Owen Tremblay has patched tires, adjusted brakes and replaced chains for anyone who rolls up, charging nothing beyond the cost of parts. Tremblay says the idea originated last winter, when his own bike was stolen and he discovered that a replacement was considerably beyond his budget. Rebuilding a discarded bicycle he rescued from the municipal dump taught him most of what he knows, supplemented by online tutorials. His clientele ranges from children with wobbly training wheels to seniors who depend on bicycles for grocery shopping. Neighbour Diane Leblanc, whose daughter's bike was repaired in twenty minutes, describes him as remarkably patient and meticulous. Not everyone was initially enthusiastic. The owner of a nearby bike shop worried the stand would undercut his business, but after visiting, he now refers customers with minor repairs to Tremblay and has even donated a professional toolkit. Tremblay intends to continue through October, weather permitting, and is considering recruiting classmates to help. The most satisfying moment, he says, is watching a youngster ride away grinning.
