NARRATOR: What began as an inconvenience on a quiet Mississauga street ended as one of the most memorable evenings its residents can recall. Shortly after six o'clock on Thursday, a failed transformer plunged roughly four hundred homes into darkness during an unseasonably warm evening. With televisions silent and phone batteries dwindling, sixteen-year-old Nadia Haddad carried her saxophone onto her front porch, intending only to practise for an upcoming audition. Within minutes, a neighbour emerged with an acoustic guitar, followed by a retired drummer hauling a snare drum down his driveway. By eight, an impromptu band of nearly a dozen musicians, ranging in age from nine to seventy-four, was performing in the middle of the street, while more than two hundred spectators settled onto lawn chairs and coolers. Several families, anxious that the contents of their freezers would spoil, fired up their barbecues and handed out hamburgers and grilled corn to anyone who wandered by. Utility crews restored electricity at about eleven o'clock, prompting what one resident described as the least enthusiastic cheer she had ever heard. Organizers are now petitioning the city for permission to close the street every August and repeat the concert deliberately, though Haddad admits she still has an audition to worry about.
