NARRATOR: A six-year-old boy from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, is celebrating a joyful homecoming this week after his treasured stuffed moose spent nearly a week travelling without him. Liam Whelan left the toy, named Captain, tucked into a seat pocket on a flight home from a family holiday in Halifax. His parents didn't realize it was missing until bedtime, when Liam refused to sleep without it. His mother contacted the airline's lost and found office, but was warned that small items are seldom recovered. A flight attendant, however, had already spotted the moose during a routine inspection. Rather than send it off to a storage facility, the crew decided to keep Captain with them on their scheduled routes, photographing him in the cockpit, gazing out the window and wearing a tiny paper pilot's cap. The photographs were forwarded to the family each evening. Five days later, the same crew handed Captain over at the arrivals area in Deer Lake, along with a handwritten certificate naming him an honorary crew member. Liam's mother says her son has since announced his ambitions: he intends to fly planes. The airline says the crew acted entirely on their own initiative, but it plans to recognize them at an upcoming employee gathering.
