NARRATOR: Students at a high school in Canmore, Alberta, got an unexpected visitor on Tuesday morning when a young female elk wandered into the gymnasium in the middle of basketball practice. According to coach Daniel Reyes, the animal walked in through a side door that someone had left open because the gym was getting too warm. “At first, the teenagers thought it was somebody wearing a costume,” Reyes said. “Then it started chewing on the volleyball net.” Staff calmly guided the students into the change rooms and locked the main entrances to keep the animal from roaming the hallways. Wildlife officers arrived within twenty minutes. Rather than sedating the elk, they opened the doors at both ends of the gym and stood back. After about an hour, the elk strolled out across the football field and disappeared into the surrounding forest. Nobody was injured, although the net will need replacing. Elk are a familiar sight around Canmore, particularly in autumn, and conservation officers remind residents to stay at least thirty metres away. School administrators say the side door will now remain closed, even on warm days. Students, meanwhile, have already voted to name the elk after their team's mascot, and several now say they hope she drops by again.
