NARRATOR: Residents of Flin Flon, Manitoba, have raised enough money to keep their small neighbourhood movie theatre open. The theatre, which has shown films for more than sixty years, was set to close this spring after its owner, Gord Peters, announced he could no longer keep it going. The main difficulty was the projector. Film companies now deliver movies only as digital files, and the theatre's old machine simply could not play them. A replacement costs about $70,000. Instead of watching the doors close, a group of local parents started a campaign in January. They sold memberships for $100 each, held bake sales at the hockey arena, and asked neighbourhood businesses for donations. In just eight weeks, more than six hundred people signed up. The theatre will now be operated as a community organization, with Peters staying on as manager and volunteers selling tickets and popcorn. Members will receive free admission on the first Monday of every month. Peters says he never imagined such support. The new projector arrives next month, and the first film, chosen by a members' vote, will be a family comedy.
