Part 1: Reading Correspondence

Dear Ms. Evans,

I’m writing about the field trip my son Lucas mentioned—it’s to the science museum next Friday, right? He’s in your Grade 5 class, and he’s super excited about it. I just wanted to double-check a few details since the permission slip didn’t have much info.

What time will the kids leave and return to school? I need to arrange pickup since I work until 3 p.m. Also, is lunch provided, or should Lucas pack something? He’s got a peanut allergy, so I’d rather send his own food if there’s any risk. Oh, and does he need extra money for anything, like a gift shop?

One more question—will the teachers be supervising the whole time, or are there museum guides too? Lucas can wander off when he’s excited, so I’d feel better knowing how it’s managed. Thanks for organizing this—I know he’ll have a blast!

Regards,

Tara

Subject: Food Truck Fest This Weekend!

Hi Jack,

The Downtown Food Truck Festival is happening this weekend, and it’s going to be a blast! I’m eyeing the for their spicy chicken tacos—total game-changer. If you’re into burgers, has a veggie combo with sweet potato fries that’s calling your name. For something sweet, offers vegan cupcakes you can’t skip. It’s on Saturday with live music, and Sunday with kids’ stuff—get there early to beat the rush! My neighbor’s already planning her dessert haul. Want to hit it up together?

Cheers,

Sara

Part 3: Reading for Information

A

The organic food movement has grown rapidly as consumers prioritize health and sustainability. Organic products, free from synthetic pesticides, appeal to those seeking natural diets. Supermarkets now dedicate entire sections to organic produce, with sales rising 10% annually. Farmers’ markets also thrive, offering locally grown organic goods. However, organic food often costs more than conventional options.

B

Environmental benefits are a key driver of the organic movement. Organic farming reduces soil degradation and promotes biodiversity by avoiding chemical fertilizers. Studies show organic farms support 50% more pollinators, like bees, than conventional ones. Transitioning to organic methods, however, can be financially risky for farmers due to lower yields initially. Government subsidies help ease this shift in some countries.

C

Health claims about organic food remain debated. Some studies suggest organic produce has higher nutrient levels, but evidence is inconsistent. Consumers often choose organic to avoid pesticide residues, believing it’s safer. Critics argue that conventional food is just as safe when properly regulated. Despite the debate, organic labels influence purchasing decisions for many shoppers.

D

The organic movement faces challenges in scaling up to meet demand. Limited organic farmland restricts supply, driving up prices. In developing countries, organic certification is costly, discouraging small farmers. Efforts to streamline certification processes are underway, but progress is slow. Meanwhile, large corporations entering the organic market raise concerns about quality standards.

Decide which paragraph, (A) to (D), has the information given in each statement below. Select (E) if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. Organic food sales are increasing by 10% each year.
  2. Organic farming completely eliminates environmental issues.
  3. Organic farms support more pollinators than conventional ones.
  4. Organic produce is always more nutritious than conventional food.
  5. Organic certification is affordable for all farmers.
  6. Farmers’ markets sell locally grown organic products.
  7. Large corporations are entering the organic market.
  8. Organic food is priced the same as conventional food.
  9. Government subsidies support farmers transitioning to organic methods.

Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints

The push for sustainable transport has sparked a debate between electric cars (EVs) and traditional gas-powered vehicles. In Oslo, a leader in EV adoption, drivers and experts share their stances.

Freya Olsen, an environmentalist, loves EVs. "They’re clean and quiet—perfect for the planet," she says. "Charging beats gas stations, but range anxiety is real." She values eco-benefits, despite limitations.

Bjorn Larsen, a mechanic, prefers gas cars. "They’re reliable and go farther," he explains. "Fueling up is quick, though emissions are a downside." He trusts the familiar, despite pollution concerns.

Ingrid Hansen, a teacher, uses both. "I drive an EV locally, but my gas car’s for road trips," she notes. "Each fits a purpose." She sees them as situational tools.

Tor Erikson, an EV engineer, backs electric fully. "Gas cars are dinosaurs—EVs are the future," he argues. "They’re efficient and green; combustion’s obsolete." He believes EVs will dominate soon.

Transport analyst Kari Nilsen offers balance. "EVs cut emissions, but gas cars offer range," she says. "We need more chargers and cleaner gas options—both have roles now." She calls for progress over picking winners.

  2. Bjorn Larsen’s primary reason for gas cars is that he...

  3. Ingrid Hansen’s perspective differs from Freya’s and Tor’s because she...
