The question

You received a gift that you don't really need or like, and you’d like to return it. However, the store policy states that items can only be returned within 30 days, and it’s been 35 days since you received the gift. You’re unsure how to approach the situation.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to the store manager and ask for an exception to the return policy.

OR Talk to the person who gave you the gift and explain why you would like to return it.

Excellent answer (transcript): around CLB 11–12

I think the best approach would be to speak with the store manager. While I understand the return policy, I would explain the situation respectfully, highlighting that the item is unused and still in perfect condition. I would ask if they could consider making an exception, as I truly appreciate the thought behind the gift but feel I won’t get much use out of it. If the store manager is unable to help, I’ll accept the decision and be more mindful of return deadlines in the future. It’s always good to approach situations like this with respect and a solution-oriented mindset.

Good answer (transcript): around CLB 7–8

I understand the situation, and I think I would talk to the store manager. I know it's past the return window, but I would explain the circumstances politely and ask if there's any possibility of an exception. It's worth a try, especially if the item is unused. If they refuse, I’ll just accept it and make sure not to miss the return deadline in the future.

Basic answer (transcript): around CLB 4–5

Hey, I think I will talk to the store manager first. It’s been a few days over the policy, but maybe they can still help. I will explain the situation and ask if they can make an exception. If not, I will just keep the gift. I hope they understand.
