The question

Do you think hospitals should allow the use of portable electronic devices like smartphones in patient areas? Why or why not?

Excellent answer (transcript): around CLB 11–12

I believe that hospitals should allow limited use of portable electronic devices like smartphones in patient areas, but with certain restrictions. Firstly, smartphones can provide patients with important emotional support by allowing them to stay connected with family and friends, which is vital for mental well-being during hospitalization. However, the use of these devices should be restricted to designated areas or specific times, as excessive noise and distractions can disrupt the healing process. Hospitals are environments that require peace and focus, and patients need to rest without interruptions. Additionally, smartphones should not interfere with medical equipment, so it’s essential to ensure that they are used responsibly. In conclusion, while the use of smartphones in hospitals should be allowed, it should be regulated to ensure a balance between patient comfort and the necessary medical environment.

Good answer (transcript): around CLB 7–8

I believe hospitals should limit the use of portable electronic devices like smartphones in patient areas. First, it’s important to maintain a quiet and calm environment for patients who need to rest and recover. Constant phone use can disrupt that peaceful atmosphere. Second, smartphones can be a source of distractions, both for patients and healthcare staff. Patients may become distracted by their phones, and medical professionals may have to deal with unnecessary interruptions. However, I do think there should be designated areas where patients and visitors can use their phones, as long as it doesn't interfere with hospital operations. In conclusion, while smartphones have many benefits, their use in patient areas should be regulated for the comfort and safety of all.

Basic answer (transcript): around CLB 4–5

I think hospitals should not let people use phones. Phones can be loud, and it can disturb patients who need rest. Also, hospitals need quiet for doctors to talk about health problems. So, I don’t think it’s a good idea.
