CELPIP Speaking Task 7 Sample Answer: Self-Driving Trucks and Unemployment in Logistics

In my assessment, the advent of autonomous trucks presents a double-edged sword regarding employment in logistics. While automation promises enhanced efficiency, cost reduction, and improved safety, it inevitably threatens the livelihoods of many truck drivers. Conversely, it may generate new roles in vehicle supervision, software development, and maintenance. Proactive workforce transition strategies, including reskilling and education initiatives, are imperative to mitigate unemployment risks and harness the benefits of technological progress responsibly.

I believe that self-driving trucks could increase unemployment in the logistics industry by replacing many drivers. However, automation might also create new job opportunities in tech maintenance and monitoring. While it improves efficiency and safety, governments and companies should support workers by providing retraining programs.

I think self-driving trucks might cause some people to lose jobs because machines do the work. But it can also make transportation safer and faster. Maybe new jobs will come in other areas.
