CELPIP Writing Course · Lesson 9 of 9
Timing and the Final Check
By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated
The last lesson is about finishing well. A simple time plan and a checklist protect the marks you have already earned.
The time plan
| Stage | Task 1 (27 min) | Task 2 (26 min) |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | 3 min | 3 min |
| Write | 20 min | 19 min |
| Check | 4 min | 4 min |
Glance at the timer when you finish each paragraph. If you are behind, shorten the next paragraph rather than skipping the conclusion.
The 3-minute checklist
- Task: every bullet point (Task 1) or a clear choice (Task 2)?
- Tone: consistent from greeting to sign-off?
- Length: 150–200 words on the counter?
- Spelling: names, places and words you often misspell.
- Your error pattern: search for it (for example, missing articles).
What to practise next
Write at least one email and one survey response with the real timers before your test, then compare them with model answers at different levels. CELPass scores each answer on the four dimensions and highlights the errors you repeat.
Key points
- About 3 minutes planning, 19–20 writing, 4 checking.
- Check task, tone, length, spelling and your own error pattern.
- Never skip the conclusion; shorten earlier paragraphs instead.
Exercise
It's minute 22 of Task 1 and you have written two of three body paragraphs. What do you do?
- Your decision
Show answers
- Write a short third paragraph (two sentences) for the last bullet, add a one-line closing and sign-off, then use the remaining time to check. A missing bullet costs more than a short one.
