Can You Combine CELPIP Scores From Two Tests?
By Megan · Scores and immigration · Published · 3 min read
If you scored CLB 9 in Speaking on your first CELPIP attempt and CLB 9 in Listening on your second, it is natural to want the best of both. IRCC does not allow that. This post explains the one-report rule, what it means for retakes and Express Entry profiles, and how to plan your attempts around it. Rules can change, so confirm on IRCC's website before you rely on them.
Can I combine CELPIP scores from two different tests?
No. For Canadian immigration, the results for all four skills must come from the same single test report. You cannot take your best Speaking from one CELPIP sitting and your best Listening from another, and you cannot mix CELPIP with IELTS or another test.
You can choose which valid report to use. If your second attempt is better overall, use it; if the first was better, it remains valid until it expires, and you can keep using it.
Can I retake only the CELPIP Speaking section?
No. CELPIP-General has no single-skill retake: a retake is the full test with all four components. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking, but it is for citizenship, not permanent residence.
Can I submit CELPIP results after creating my Express Entry profile?
You need valid language test results to create an Express Entry profile in the first place. If you get a better CELPIP result later, you can update your profile with the new report, and your CRS score is recalculated.
Keep your profile and your documents consistent: the results you claim must match the test report you upload when you apply, and the report must still be valid when you submit your application for permanent residence.
How should I plan retakes if I cannot combine scores?
Prepare for the whole test, not only the skill you missed. A retake that raises Speaking but drops Listening by one level can leave you no better off, so keep practising your strong skills while you work on the weak one.
- Keep one or two Listening and Reading tests a week in your plan, even if they are already at target.
- Do a full mock test under real timing before you book the retake.
- Book only when your practice results reach your target in every skill on the same day.
Can I keep using my older CELPIP result if the new one is worse?
Yes, as long as the older report is still valid. A new result does not cancel an earlier one, so a retake that goes badly costs you the fee but not the score you already had. Watch the expiry date of the older report: it must be valid when you create or update your profile and when you apply.
This is why many candidates retake while their first result is still valid: the retake can only help. If the older report is close to expiring, plan the retake earlier, so you are not left without a valid result.
- Note the test date on every report you hold; validity is counted from it.
- Decide which report to claim before you update your profile, and use the same one in your application.
- Keep a copy of each score report and its registration number.
Are there exceptions to the one-report rule?
IRCC has a public policy for applicants who cannot be tested in some skills because of a disability, using averaged scores for those skills. For everyone else, the one-report rule applies. Check IRCC's language testing pages for the current details.
