NARRATOR: A seventeen-year-old from Iqaluit has taken top honours at a national youth film competition, beating out more than three hundred entries from across the country. Grade twelve student Naomi Akavak spent last winter following her grandfather as he rebuilt a traditional wooden sled, filming mostly on a borrowed phone with a secondhand microphone. The twelve-minute documentary is narrated in Inuktitut, with English subtitles. Akavak says she originally intended the footage only as a family keepsake. It was her media teacher who persuaded her to enter, just two days before the deadline. The judges praised the film's patience and quiet humour, singling out a scene in which her grandfather scolds the camera for getting in his way. The award includes five thousand dollars and a week-long mentorship with professional filmmakers in Toronto. Akavak, who hopes to study film after graduation, plans to spend part of the prize on equipment for her school's new film club, so that younger students won't have to borrow phones the way she did. Her grandfather, meanwhile, has reportedly been less interested in the attention than in the sled, which he insists is the real star. He is already planning a second one, for his great-granddaughter.
