NARRATOR: A sixteen-year-old from Nanaimo is being praised for his quick thinking after he helped rescue a struggling swimmer on Sunday afternoon. Owen Tremblay was paddleboarding with his sister near a popular beach north of the city when he heard someone shouting. A vacationer in his sixties from Alberta had swum out farther than he anticipated and was caught in a strong current that kept dragging him away from shore.

NARRATOR: Rather than diving into the water, Tremblay paddled over, told the exhausted swimmer to hold on to the front of his board, and gradually pushed him back toward the beach. Meanwhile, his sister called nine-one-one. Paramedics examined the man on the sand, and he did not need to go to hospital.

NARRATOR: Tremblay completed a lifesaving course only last month, and he credits his instructor for teaching him never to approach a panicking swimmer without something that floats. The vacationer's family has since expressed their gratitude publicly, and a local community group plans to give Tremblay an award. Tremblay, however, insists he was simply in the right place at the right time. What he would really like, he says, is for permanent warning signs about the current to be installed at that beach.
