NARRATOR: An eight-year-old from Regina has turned a modest summer lemonade stand into a remarkable fundraising phenomenon. Ava Kowalski set up her stand in July with a hand-painted table and a single pitcher, intending to raise $100 for the children's hospital that treated her younger brother after a serious asthma attack last winter. Her mother posted a photograph of the stand on a neighbourhood social media page, and within days, customers were lining up around the block. Several local businesses donated cups, ice and sugar, and a nearby bakery contributed a cookie for every purchase. By the time the stand closed on Labour Day, Ava had collected more than $14,000, including a single donation of $5,000 left in an unsigned envelope beneath the cash box. Hospital representatives say the money will purchase specialized equipment for the pediatric respiratory unit. Ava, however, appears remarkably unimpressed by all the attention. Asked about her achievement, she shrugged, insisted that her customers deserved the credit, and explained that she mostly enjoyed squeezing the lemons. Her family insists the stand will return next summer, though her brother has reportedly negotiated a promotion to cashier.
