NARRATOR: After two years of reconstruction, the Carmichael Arena in Sudbury will reopen its doors this Saturday, and local hockey families say the wait has felt even longer. The old arena, built in 1958, was closed after engineers discovered serious cracks in its roof beams. At the time, the city considered tearing it down permanently, but more than three thousand residents signed a petition to save it. The rebuild ended up costing $14 million, about $3 million over budget, largely because of rising steel prices. The new building keeps the original brick front, but almost everything behind it is new, including a second ice pad, an elevator and a heated viewing area for parents. For the past two seasons, minor hockey teams have been driving as far as Espanola for practices, sometimes leaving at five in the morning. Coach Linda Paquette says she has lost count of the breakfasts eaten in the back of a minivan. Saturday's celebration will feature a game between two local teams and a free public skate. Organizers expect a big crowd, and they're asking anyone who can to walk or take the bus, since construction of the parking lot won't be finished until December.
