NARRATOR: A Charlottetown diner marked its seventy-fifth anniversary on Saturday by rolling its menu back to 1950, and the response was overwhelming. The Harbourview Diner unlocked its doors at six in the morning, when coffee cost a nickel and a hot turkey sandwich went for thirty-five cents. By seven, the line stretched around the block. Owner Lisa MacKinnon, whose grandparents founded the restaurant, says she anticipated a busy day, but not a queue of nearly four hundred people, some of whom had driven from Moncton. The kitchen ran out of turkey before noon and switched to grilled cheese, which nobody seemed to mind. MacKinnon admits the promotion lost money, roughly four thousand dollars by her estimate, but she describes it as a gesture of gratitude rather than a business decision. Customers were encouraged to drop their spare change into a jar for the local food bank, and many contributed far more than their bill. By closing time, the jar held over six thousand dollars. One devoted regular, ninety-one-year-old Walter Gaudet, ordered the identical breakfast he had eaten on opening day as a teenager. He told reporters it tasted exactly the same, though he conceded his memory might be generous.
