NARRATOR: A family in Prince George, British Columbia, has been reunited with their border collie, nearly three weeks after she vanished during a thunderstorm and was discovered more than two hundred kilometres away. Juniper, a four-year-old herding dog, bolted from the family's backyard on August ninth, apparently terrified by the thunder. Despite long searches, hundreds of posters and countless online appeals, the Lachance family had reluctantly begun to lose hope. Then, last Tuesday, a long-haul trucker named Rick Sorensen noticed a thin, exhausted dog wandering near a highway rest stop outside Williams Lake and coaxed her into his cab with half a sandwich. A veterinary clinic scanned the microchip implanted beneath her skin and immediately contacted the family. Veterinarian Lisa Oduya says Juniper was dehydrated and had lost a lot of weight, but was otherwise remarkably healthy. Experts remain uncertain whether the dog travelled the entire distance on foot or hitched an unintended ride in a vehicle. The Lachances, who registered the chip only months ago at their daughter's insistence, now describe themselves as passionate advocates for microchipping. They have also offered Sorensen the reward they had promised, but he has requested that it be donated to the local animal shelter instead.
