NARRATOR: Six students from a small high school in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, have captured first place at a national robotics competition in Montreal, defeating more than forty schools, several of them from Canada's largest cities. The weekend contest challenged teams to build a robot capable of sorting coloured blocks and stacking them on a moving platform in under two minutes. The Moose Jaw squad, competing for only the second time, entered the final round in last place after their robot's arm malfunctioned during qualifying. Overnight, the students dismantled the mechanism in their hotel room, replacing a cracked gear with a component fashioned from a plastic spatula borrowed from the breakfast buffet. The improvised repair held, and the robot completed the final task with eleven seconds to spare. Team captain Priya Sandhu, seventeen, attributed the victory to persistence rather than sophisticated equipment, noting that the team's annual budget is a fraction of what larger programs spend. Their teacher, Glen Moreau, says the school has already received inquiries from local businesses. The team now qualifies for an international championship in Texas next spring, although organizers caution that travel costs, estimated at fifteen thousand dollars, have not yet been covered.
