NARRATOR: Children in Barrie, Ontario, will have a new place to cool off next summer, thanks largely to a petition started by two ten-year-olds. City council voted eight to three on Tuesday night to build a splash pad in a small park in the city's south end. The idea began last July, when classmates Ava Chen and Liam Brooks arrived at a city beach on one of the hottest afternoons of the year, only to be told it had already reached capacity. Instead of simply complaining, they made a poster and went door to door with their parents, collecting nearly twelve hundred signatures. They also wrote to every councillor, explaining that most children in their neighbourhood had no easy way to reach a splash pad independently. The project is estimated to cost about $450,000. Several councillors questioned the expense and suggested waiting a year until the city's finances improve. However, a local business association offered to cover a third of the cost, which helped the motion pass. Asked how she felt, Ava said she was proud, but a little disappointed that the splash pad won't open until June. Liam, meanwhile, says their next petition will be for a skateboard park.
