NARRATOR: An Edmonton teenager has turned a school woodworking assignment into a neighbourhood movement. Fifteen-year-old Amara Okafor built her first little free library, a weatherproof wooden box on a post where anyone can take or leave a book, for a class project last winter. At her teacher's suggestion, she donated it, installing it in a park near her home. Within a month, the shelves were emptying faster than she could restock them, and neighbours began leaving handwritten notes asking for more. Since then, Okafor has built fourteen boxes, using lumber donated by a local contractor and leftover paint from her grandfather's garage. The city initially hesitated, citing concerns about vandalism and maintenance, but approved a trial after Okafor promised that a volunteer would inspect every box once a week. So far, only one has been damaged, and it was repaired within days. Okafor says the most popular books aren't novels but children's picture books, which she suspects reflects the number of young families in the surrounding streets. Her goal is twenty-five boxes by next summer, enough for every park in her area, and she has already begun teaching younger students to build their own.
