Dear Melissa,
I hope this email finds you well. I'm writing to discuss an idea I've been thinking about for our neighborhood kids - organizing a street hockey tournament on Maple Avenue during the upcoming long weekend in May.
Since moving to Burnaby last year, I've noticed how many children in our area love playing street hockey. Almost every evening, I see at least 6 or 7 kids with hockey sticks playing in their driveways. My son Tyler has made several friends this way, and I think a small tournament would be a wonderful community event.
I've already spoken with a few parents on our block, and they seem quite enthusiastic about the idea. We're thinking of blocking off the cul-de-sac portion of Maple Avenue from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, May 21st. I contacted the city office yesterday, and they said we would need to get signatures from at least 75% of the residents on our street and submit a temporary road closure application by April 30th. The application fee is only $45, which I'm happy to cover.
For the tournament itself, I'm envisioning 4-5 teams with 5-6 players each, ages 8-14. We could set up a simple round-robin format in the morning, followed by playoffs in the afternoon. Nothing too competitive - the focus would be on fun and community building. I was touched when Mr. Peterson from the corner house offered to donate water bottles and oranges for all the participants.
I'm a bit concerned about safety, of course. I was thinking we could require helmets for all players and have at least two parents supervising at all times. Do you think we should also have some basic first aid supplies on hand? I have a kit, but it might need restocking.
Since you've lived in the neighborhood longer than I have and you organized that wonderful Easter egg hunt last month, I thought you might have some insights or suggestions. Would you be interested in helping coordinate this event? Your experience would be invaluable, and I'd be a little less nervous with your support.
Please let me know what you think. If you're interested, perhaps we could meet for coffee at that little café on Hastings Street this weekend to discuss the details further.
Thanks for considering this!
Warmly,Sarah

Dear Sarah, Thank you for your email about the street hockey tournament. What a fantastic idea! I'd be more than happy to . The Easter egg hunt was much simpler than what you're proposing, but I learned a lot about coordinating neighborhood activities. I agree that is essential - perhaps we could ask Dr. Williams down the street if she would be willing to be on standby? She's a pediatrician and I know she has . Regarding the tournament structure, I wonder if we should consider based on age groups? The skill difference between 8 and 14-year-olds can be quite significant. I'm free this Saturday afternoon for coffee, and I can bring the I used for the Easter event. Looking forward to making this happen! Best, Melissa
