The question

Do you think people should be allowed to post anonymous comments online? Why or why not?

Excellent answer (transcript): around CLB 11–12

I believe that while anonymous online comments should be allowed to some extent, there must be safeguards in place to prevent misuse. Firstly, anonymity allows people to voice their opinions freely without fear of personal retribution, which is especially important for those in vulnerable situations or those discussing sensitive topics. However, anonymity also creates a breeding ground for negative behaviors such as cyberbullying and trolling, where individuals feel no accountability for their actions. This can damage the mental health of others and create a toxic online environment. Therefore, while anonymity can be a tool for free speech, it should be regulated. Websites should monitor comments for harmful content and ensure that users are not using anonymity to harm others. In conclusion, the freedom to comment anonymously should be protected, but it must come with responsibility to prevent harm.

Good answer (transcript): around CLB 7–8

I think anonymous online comments should be allowed, but with some limits. On one hand, allowing anonymity gives people the freedom to express their opinions without fear of judgment. This is especially important for sensitive issues. On the other hand, anonymity can also lead to cyberbullying and harmful comments. So, there should be some way to prevent abuse, like monitoring comments for harmful content. In conclusion, while I think anonymous comments can be beneficial for free speech, there needs to be a balance to ensure they are not misused.

Basic answer (transcript): around CLB 4–5

I think anonymous comments are not good. Sometimes people say bad things online and it hurts others. It’s better if people use their names so they think before posting. So, I don’t think it’s a good idea to allow anonymous comments.
