Part 2: Reading to Apply a Diagram
By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated
Part 2 combines a diagram (a schedule, price list, map or floor plan) with an email. The skill is applying information: matching someone's needs to the right option.
Needs first, diagram second
Start with the email: what does the person need, what is their budget, which days can they attend? List the conditions. Then look at the diagram for the option that meets all of them.
The one-condition trap
Wrong options usually satisfy one condition and break another: the cheapest class, but on a day the person works; the closest store, but closed on Sundays. Check every condition before you choose.
Read the small print
Footnotes, asterisks and legends in the diagram often hold the deciding detail: "*members only", "prices exclude tax", "closed holidays". Look for them before you answer.
Key points
- List the person's conditions before reading the diagram.
- The right answer meets every condition.
- Check footnotes and legends.
Exercise
Classes: Yoga Mon/Wed 7 p.m. $80; Pilates Tue/Thu 6 p.m. $70; Spin Sat 9 a.m. $60*. (*members only.) The email: "I work until 6:30 on weekdays, I'm not a member, and I'd like to spend under $90."
- Which class fits?
Show answers
- Yoga: Pilates starts before 6:30, and Spin is cheapest but members only.
