Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints

By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated

Part 4 is the longest and hardest text: an opinion article followed by a reader's comment. It tests whether you can follow an argument and tell whose view is whose.

Whose opinion is it?

Articles present several voices: the writer, experts they quote, critics they describe. As you read, note each view and who holds it. Many questions ask what the writer thinks, and the trap is an opinion the writer reports but disagrees with.

  • Reporting signals: some argue, critics claim, according to, supporters say.
  • Writer's own view: however, in fact, I believe, the reality is, this ignores.

The reader's comment

The comment responds to the article. First decide whether the commenter agrees or disagrees overall, then complete each gap so it is consistent with both their position and the article's facts.

Protect your time

Part 4 has about 13 minutes for 10 questions on a long text. Read at a steady pace once rather than skimming twice, and do not get stuck on one hard question; choose your best answer and come back if time allows.

Key points

  • Track who holds each opinion.
  • Reported views are traps when the question asks about the writer.
  • Decide the commenter's position before filling gaps.

Exercise

Text: "Critics say remote work weakens teams. Yet the evidence from our own office suggests the opposite: collaboration improved once meetings became shorter and better planned."

  1. What does the writer believe about remote work and teams?
Show answers
  1. That remote work has not weakened teams; collaboration improved. "Weakens teams" is the critics' view, which the writer rejects.
